Riddle’s pulse pounded in his ears, loud and ragged. The air between them buzzed with everything that hadn’t been said before now.
“Or nothing?” she echoed, her voice low—dangerously soft. “I’ll show you nothing,” She loomed over him. “If you don’t end things with that boy, I’ll disown you.”
“Then do it.”
His mother—no, Edith Rosehearts—stood there, stunned. Speechless. Like she hadn’t expected him to fight back.

Her expression softened for a moment, pained, but then she straightened and locked eyes with him. “Again,” she said, her voice steady, unwavering. “400 this time.”
Denki clenched his jaw and nodded, forcing the electricity out once more.
They worked their way up, 500, 600, 700—each jolt ripping through him as the stinging turned to burning.
At 800 volts, his dad’s body finally reacted.
Denki let out a broken sob of relief as his dad’s chest finally began to rise and fall, shallow but steady—just like it was supposed to..

Floyd didn’t speak. He just held him. Listening.
“So every time you say it, I—I don’t know what to do with it. I don’t know how to hold it properly. It feels like… like if I say it back, I have to be something. Something perfect. Something good enough to deserve it.”
He blinked rapidly, the pressure behind his eyes building. “And I know you don’t think like that. I know it’s not conditional for you, but… I haven’t unlearned it yet.”
“I don’t say it,” Riddle whispered, “because I don’t want to say it wrong. Or say it when I’m scared, or not sure, or trying to be someone I’m not.”
“I want to say it when I can’t not say it. When it’s real. When it feels like mine.”

“Oh my God, a hidden Mickey!” someone shouted nearby—a woman in mouse ears, pointing frantically at a decorative tile on the ground like she’d just found the lost city of Atlantis.
Nico turned slowly, blinking. He now wore Minnie Mouse ears—pink bow and all—perched lopsided on his head. His face was a mix of concern and mild dread.
“What in Tartarus is a hidden Mickey?” he asked, glancing at Drew like she’d dragged him into a cult initiation.
Drew, fully unbothered, wore classic Mickey ears and was sipping from a bright red slushie cup shaped like a balloon.
She shrugged. “Disney adults,” she said, like that explained everything.
Nico stared off for a beat, as if reevaluating his entire life. “So we’re just pretending this is normal?”
“We’re in a park where a man-sized duck signs autographs,” Drew said flatly. “Define normal.”
Cut to a zoomed-in shot of the ‘hidden Mickey’ in question—three tiny stones vaguely resembling the iconic shape—while whimsical music played softly over it.
Nico’s voice came from off-camera: “That’s it? That’s what made her shriek like she saw God?”

“Just wanted to confirm something. Oh, and I might need your help.”
“Ah?” Leonard said this, while Klein thought it.
“You see, my psychiatric session with Mr. World is going to start very soon after our conversation. I’ve been experimenting with dream therapy, and I’d like your assistance.”
“Oh, you want me to enter his dreams?”
“Yes.” Her lips slowly curled up into a smile. “You are free to express your true feelings and make his experience as exciting as possible.”
Leonard’s eyes shone. “I didn’t know you were this type of person. I like you.”
They shared a conspiratorial gaze that made Klein want to sweat profusely.
“Of course, we need approval first.” Audrey turned towards the tall mottled throne. “Honorable Mr. Fool, may we request your aid in bringing Mr. Star to Mr. World as well? Temporary deception will be useful for his treatment. We will inform him once the operation is over.”
Klein swore he was about to lose control on the spot.
“We will humbly accept your refusal,” said Audrey quickly, bowing her head even more.
“I will provide assistance.” The low voice hummed a (barely) monotone approval.
“Praise The Fool!” said Audrey piously.
“Praise The Fool,” said Leonard as well.
“Help,” thought The Fool. (What a loser, ruining his own surprise confession/jk)

They shared a laugh, and then Leonard pulled him closer. He looked deeply into his eyes, and said, "Humans love each other despite our mortality, my dear Klein. I'll love you until I lose you, and when I do, it'll be beautifully depressing. I'd rather hurt from loving you than from regretting I did not."
Despite himself, Klein smiled. "You should write a book. Your poetry is getting better."
"I didn’t know you were so good at provoking people." He laughed. "I'll take it as a compliment."

Summary
Because every day after he woke up still in pain, and he couldn’t even tell his own family (because what if I can’t be a firefighter anymore? what if they don’t let me?). And then he’s hugging Eddie and they’re welcoming him home and maybe, just maybe, for a second he believes that it won’t be so bad.
Because then he was choking on his own blood staring into Bobby’s eyes thinking this is it, isn’t it? And then he woke up because damn, he always wakes up and somehow that’s always worse. And he wants to laugh at himself because how did he think, even for a moment, that anything would ever be ok?
Because then he was on blood thinners and they wouldn’t let him home, and he just wanted to go home (what if I can’t be a firefighter anymore?)
Because then the lawsuit happened and he just lost everything all over again.

Summary
He knows he could have called Maddie and she would have been there, though the memory of her disappointment last time stopped him. As for everyone else—even if he weren’t prohibited from talking to them by his lawyer, Buck doubts anyone would have come. The last time they talked was when they ran into each other in the grocery store a week back, and, since Buck is not eager for a repeat of that interaction, he doesn’t even consider calling anyone in to hold his hand for what is, he tells himself, probably just another little blip on his road back to the 118.
He is able to convince himself of this up until the moment Dr. Gutierrez walks into his room and says, “Well, Evan, you just can’t seem to do anything the easy way, can you?”
Because, as it turns out, there is a circumstance under which a tiny clot that doesn’t cause you to vomit blood in front of all of your friends and family is worse than three big ones that do: that circumstance is called ‘being on blood thinners.’
