"Frogs. That if you put a frog in a pot of water and slowly turn up the heat until it's boiling, the frog won't jump out because it doesn't realize the temperature's changed. It's a metaphor for how we can get used to anything even if it's killing us."
Really you were talking about the long end of the world, the snowless futures, but he probably thought you were talking about something else.
