Summary
Stiles, worried that Scott may actually leave him behind because of his newfound popularity, is desperate to cling to something away from the drama of Lydia Martin's amazing parties and the woes of high school lacrosse. What he finds is Derek Hale, a guy who seemingly hates Stiles at first, but slowly, and insistently, becomes friends with him. As their friendship grows, Stiles starts to wonder if they could ever become something more or if pushing what they have will lead him to being alone for good.

this did not go in at all the the beginning led me to expect. for what it's worth, as a note for other readers, this is mostly a relatively miscommunication-free everyone-gets-along and fights evil together kind of fic, which is exactly what I love. Scott comes around on Derek as Stiles' boyfriend after part 9 (which is only about a third of the way into the story wordcount-wise), and is a true and loyal friend to them both thereafter, and that conflict is just broadly not the focus of this work as a whole.

“Then why wouldn’t you be Derek’s emissary?” Stiles asked. He just wished Deaton would get to the fucking point. He was tired and he hated playing twenty questions to figure out what the older man was getting at.
“Derek’s emissary needs to be someone who he trusts completely,” Deaton explained, “and it’s time I passed on my wisdom and expertise to that person.”
The beat of silence between them stretched for too long before Stiles realized exactly who Deaton was talking about.
“Me?” He asked incredulously.

Summary
There's a relentless dark shape tearing through the pack and that's only the half of it. Stiles just wants to sleep and stop being haunted by the faces of his night-time tormentors. His dad thinks he's suffering from post-traumatic stress, Scott thinks he's suffering the after-effects of the ritual; Stiles thinks they're both reasonable theories, except for the part where Derek Hale is the only thing that can take his nightmares away and it seems that fact is no coincidence.

Derek scowls at the page, tempted to flip straight to the back. But in the corner in tiny letters:
Yes, you can turn the page today.
With a huff, he does.
The next page has the present date and a short message:Here we are on the first day of me gone. I am on my way to get properly educated and you are on your way to find a treasure chest. Wipe that frown off your face, Sourwolf.
We are both beginning an adventure, so put on something comfortable and pack a change of underwear.There’s an actual treasure map taped to the page.
