He wanted Fermín to call again. Pedro wouldn’t deny it, couldn’t lie so blatantly. He wanted to hear that voice through his crunchy phone speaker, wanted to listen to the soft rhythmic speech so close to his ear, he could almost imagine that Fermín was there, murmuring the sweetest words he would never have said if they were face to face.
Maybe that’s why the phone calls worked. Maybe that tiny bit of separation, the illusion of anonymity was enough to let the old friends talk again, even if only in the context of lewd jokes and a reluctant, bitter fondness.

He had wanted it too when they were done with their duties for the day and Johann finally dragged him back to the hotel they were staying at, practically throwing him through the door before Diogo was on him, hands frantic on Johann’s shirt buttons.
