The flashback is still very much blurry– he cannot recognize who is holding him, or where they are, or what’s going on– but he can clearly feel the touch. He feels the way the other person was shaking slightly, how he was trying to calm them down, it all feels real. He doesn’t understand it.
It ends as soon as it started, leaving the machine standing there, confused. It looks at its hand– now fully metal, but the touch lingers.
