Summary
Carmen never particularly avoided mirrors. When he was a teenager he tried not to look at them, for obvious reasons, like puberty and not feeling masculine enough. Then he just…never grew out of it. It’s not like he covers them, or punches them, or anything extreme. He still has to make sure he looks more like a human than a sleep deprived zombie. So he shaves almost every damn day, he tries to fix his unruly curls into something presentable.
It’s just if he looks too long he feels weird. Like his face isn't right, isn’t how it's supposed to be. Whatever that means. He's felt it a couple times, clocked it as some weird anxiety symptom, then moved on. He has enough on his plate, he'd rather not do a deep dive into whatever fucking feeling that is.
Or: Carmen ignores and ignores and ignores until she can't anymore.

This is the problem with being sick, with being back in Chicago—in Copenhagen or New York, the distance was a balm. He didn’t have to think about this shit when he was halfway across the country, or when he’d buried himself in work six feet under. But there’s not anywhere to run anymore. He’s a thirty minute drive away from his brother’s gravestone, and it's a gravitational pull, dragging him in.
Carmy finds himself at rock bottom and keeps digging.
