His eyebrows rise at this. “You know Robin doesn’t have the cash for that,” he tells her. “And, really, Byers?”
“He probably doesn’t either,” she allows, “so maybe we go without them.”
Steve’s eyes lock onto hers. “We go without them?” he repeats calmly.

Sometimes on good days, when his dad wasn’t screaming and shouting at everything that moved, he’d put Bob in the truck and drive out on the 72 and go fishing with him in the evening. Flashlights in the dark, streaking dim across expanses of black water, muggy air, mosquitoes. Little red eyes looking back out of the water. They’d sit and guess how big the gators were from the distance between the eyes. You’d better watch yourself out here, Bobby, his dad would say sometimes, and pretend to start to push him forward over the boardwalk with a big hand splayed on his back. And he’d laugh and laugh, like it was funny.
Bob had never thought it was funny. But he’d learned early on to laugh along.

When Bob tries out a new solution for his wellbeing, he's advised by Barnes to keep to a schedule and avoid any variables. But this means pulling away from the New Avengers (and Yelena) for a while, and even though the results are fantastic, all that pent-up need for connection and affection has to go somewhere when the adjustment period is over.

Bob didn’t move for a moment. His dark eyes were fixed on the floor, on the crack between the elevator and the floor to her room. On the void between, tiny and endless, a crack of pitch blackness in the building that eyes never saw and a finger couldn’t fit into, but a void all the same. “Do you… want to talk about that?” he asked, his voice quiet and low and cautious.

His hair is dusty and he’s in this blue sweater and sweatpants riddled with holes from when he stepped in for the mission he wasn’t supposed to be on. He’s looking at the pantsuit-woman, with his hands hanging loose against his sides like he hasn’t got a thing to hide. Yelena had seen him only hours earlier in the vivid coloring of an East Coast sunset, getting shot at by multiple field agents with a diverse variety of arms and numerous rounds of ammunition. He’d refused to standby while they sent in an extraction team - humans he said the minute they stepped into the tower.
Just Bob, she thinks, watching his hand go further up right before she meets his eyes -
