Summary

But there are whispers. They say that the Winter Soldier can be in two places at once. They say the Winter Soldier can get in and out of anywhere. They say the Winter Soldier is a particularly advanced robot powered by murder and, for some reason, ethanol. They say the Winter Soldier assassinated Death itself and roams the world, a lost soul with perpetually unfinished business. They say the Winter Soldier eats naughty child spies for breakfast and nails for lunch. They say many things.
They never say he wanted it.

“What are you planning on doing, Andrew?” Wymack asked him, discarding the piles of paperwork littering the desk and turning his full attention to the conversation at hand.
“Going away.” Andrew told him, lighting up a cigarette and wondering the same thing. He hadn’t figured all the details out but that could be rectified by spending a week in Columbia on his own searching for jobs and apartments. He had enough left in the bank from Tildas’ life insurance to secure a lease until he found work. The only question was where he was heading, he wasn’t interested in sticking around Columbia where he could run into his family.
“You only just got off the meds, have you thought this through?” Wymack asked, leaning back in his chair and scrubbing a hand over his thinning hair. “I know Exy has never been the endgame for you, but I thought you’d stick around for the degree.”
Andrew shrugged carelessly. A degree didn’t mean anything unless you had plans to use it and Andrew wasn’t that committed to his future. “Sorry, coach. Exy just isn’t what I needed it to be any longer."
-Neil was never recruited to the Foxes. Now Andrew must face the world without his drugs and he's not impressed.

An AU where Mary never got Nathaniel out. Instead, he became too invaluable of an asset to be killed off or 'gifted' to Tetsuji. Instead, he's raised with Ichirou and Jean as a part of Ichirou's inner circle.
He'd always had a knack for languages and lying and all the 'messy stuff' came easily enough when your father is called the Butcher of Baltimore. So Nathaniel became the Wraith. He was untraceable, unknowable, infalliable; a criminal fairytale.
When Kevin Day leaves the Nest, there's no better person to send.

"Who the hell are you?" Andrew demanded.
He wasn't anyone, not really; not anymore. He hadn't really been anyone in years now. There'd been a time. Once. But there were entire lifetimes between who he could have been and what he'd become. He could taste it sometimes; blackberries and sand stinging his tongue like the iron branded on his shoulder.
It was easier to pretend he'd never been anyone at all.
"I'm nothing," he answered. The ghost of a smile pulled at his lips; sharp and cruel. "A wraith." The Wraith, he didn't say, but the shadows ran through Andrew's eyes and he wondered if Andrew had heard it anyways.
