Summary
“And you’re sure you know where you’re going?” Bill asked for the third time that morning, hanging back from the fence as Frank shouldered the bag.
“Due north through the woods until I hit the highway, then follow it east until I smell bacon.” They both forced a laugh. Frank’s face was cheerful, but he couldn’t hide the nerves that stiffened his body language, nor the darkness in his eyes. Yet he mastered himself and placed a hand on Bill’s shoulder. “Thank you for all of this. It’s been… a revelation.”
“You just get there safe.”
“Will do.”
Something leaden and corrosive slogged through Bill’s veins as he unlocked the gate and ushered Frank out into the world. His senses were on high alert on this side of the fence and he felt edgy and ice cold. “Don’t fall in any holes,” he offered lamely.
“Hey, it’s worked out well for me so far…” A burst of a smile like sunshine that quickly disappeared behind a cloud. “Bye, Bill. Take care.”
