Summary
“Come with me.”
A moment—a flicker of hesitation in the eyes Quartich had grown too familiar with. But it disappeared almost as quickly as it came.
Spider hissed and all Quaritch could see was his baby boy’s face stretching into a cruel snarl that too closely resembled that of his worst enemy.
It was then that Quaritch decided that he simply couldn’t allow Spider to escape. He couldn’t allow him to regroup with those creatures—those beasts. He couldn’t allow his son to become any more like them than he already was. He just couldn’t.
OR in which Quaritch doesn’t allow Spider to escape.

“Seriously?” Lyle said, glancing over his shoulder. “What? We patch him up just to fuck him up again right after? What’s the point in that? You’ll waste our supplies!”
“I just wanna find Sully. I’m not interested in being slowed down by having to play nurse for a child with infected wounds.” Quaritch said. “Now move out of the way.”

Summary
Eywa will provide. It was something his mom used to say all the time, both as a reassurance and a prayer. As something to rely on during hard times, and as a cry of joy during good hunts.
When the heat of the seasons were stifling below the trees, and there wasn’t much water to gain from the rivers, she’d tell him, “Eywa will provide, my little Spider.” And a few days would pass, the grey storm clouds would gather overhead, and the sky would split open. And he and his mom would drink for hours, gathering their gourds to place under large leaves, climbing to the tops of the trees to tip their heads to the water.
When they trekked through the forest, chasing a creature who was too stubborn to succumb to its wounds and their grumbling stomachs, she’d say, “Eywa always provides.” She’d say it as they curled in the branch of a tree, their bellies tightening with hunger, and the next morning they’d find its body on the ground, having drawn its last breath during the night.

Summary
The door suddenly opened again, Norm walking through with a small, whimpering human child. He was holding it awkwardly, one hand on the baby’s back, and the other arm just under its bottom. It looked far from comfortable, wriggling around in his arms as if he wanted to be let down.
“You can’t get down yet,” Norm was grumbling, tilting his head away from errant tiny hands. “What have I told you about the equipment in the lab? You can’t crawl around here, so you have to stay with me.”
With all the astute thinking of a baby, the child’s head turned, its blonde hair catching in the light as it stared at Norm. “No,” it said boldly, before stubbornly beginning to move his arms and legs again.

Summary
“Keep your eyes closed!” Kiri said teasingly, her hand encompassing the width of Spider’s face. They felt warm against his cheeks, soft in their grip, and free of calluses. Even the ones she’d earned from tree climbing with him for all those years.
He rolled his eyes behind closed lids. “Kinda hard to see anything with your hand in the way,” he retorted, hearing Neteyam snort behind him. He felt a light tug on his ponytail, reaching his hand back blindly to retaliate. “Lo’ak, I swear your tail is gonna be so sore if you don’t stop.”
Another tug on his hair, this time lighter, but Jake tutted at them and Kiri continued to lead Spider into the large hut. He could feel the cold linoleum floor beneath his toes, hear the quiet beeping of machines and smell the antiseptic hand wash. It must be one of their transportable labs, developed the year the humans evacuated Hells Gate.

Summary
With the Sullys and his inevitable adoption ‘ceremony’ - could it even be called that? - coming up, he was beginning to realise what a family was meant to be. It gave him a warm fuzzy feeling in his stomach, daily, and he found himself noticing little details of the Sullys he hadn’t allowed himself to before.
Like how Tuk hid her love for her brothers behind teasing, how she wanted to be part of their group despite being years younger, and how her threatening to tattle on them was only a ruse to get them to include her.
How Kiri tried to include everyone in her stories, tugging them up to imitate animals or themselves as she told their parents about their day.
How Lo’ak would challenge Spider and Neteyam to the most random of things, but it was really a chance for the boys to play like children, to end in a wrestling match that resulted in them dirty but breathless with laughter.
How Neteyam acted like the big brother, keeping all the younger ones in line, but really wanting to act like a child, wonder stretching his eyes wide, curiosity sending him high into the clouds on his ikran.
And although Spider was the oldest, he certainly didn’t feel like it.

Summary
“But,” Spider suddenly said, cutting his gaze between the two parents. Lo’ak could see his confusion, but underneath all that he noticed his voice held just the tiniest bit of hope as he said, “but why?”
“Because you are part of this family,” Neytiri told him, her expression open and genuine. “And we would like to know how you are feeling, we want to know what frightens you, what worries you. We want you to be part of what we have here.”
Spider looked speechless, but Lo’ak could see that glimmer of hope turn into a shimmer, his eyes filling with tears and his voice becoming hoarse with emotion. “But, I’m not a Na’vi.”
Jake sighed heavily at that, running his hand along the back of his head. “We wanted to face this conversation at a better time,” he told him, glancing over to Neytiri who nodded, “but I guess there’s no better time like the present.”
Lo’ak could feel excitement bubbling in his chest, glancing between his parents in hope for Spider.

Summary
After weeks of the same four grey walls, the open sea and sky was a balm for Spider’s mind. He’d taken his first step out of the doors and grinned, waving off Norm’s warning about his mask as he pattered down the steps. He stopped again at the bottom, staring at the sand beneath his toes in curiosity, wiggling them into the soft sensation and revelling in the refreshing coolness of the deeper layers.
He’d felt sand before, but it had been full of debris from the huts, and he’d been too concentrated on the sound of crackling flames and the all encompassing grip on the back of his neck–
He shook his head violently, the ends of his ponytail hitting the edge of his mask. No thinking about that, no bad thoughts. Not today. He was healed, he was out of that situation and for once he thought he deserved a bit of fun.

Summary
To his utter surprise, Neytiri came back the next day this time with Tuk in tow. Neytiri asked Spider to sit as he had the day previous, and Tuk climbed onto the bed with him, chatting mindlessly about her chores, the fish she saw today, what she’s thinking of calling her ilu whilst Neytiri pulled the comb through Spider’s hair, now out of its plait and falling over his shoulders.
Chatting with Tuk kept him awake this time, more aware but less nervous about what Neytiri would do to his head if left alone. Her fingers were gentle though, as they had been the day before, and Spider’s own uncertainty was sending his head into spins.
Tuk stood up on the bed, leaning against Spider’s shoulder so she could watch what her mom was doing. She made appreciative noises as she worked, tilting Spider’s head back so that she had a better view of the top of his head.
“Why didn’t you do this sooner?” Tuk asked Spider, leaning down so she was looking at him from upside down.
“I liked my hair,” Spider grumbled, crossing his arms. “It looked cool.”
Tuk laughed at him, but not in a mean way. “I bet you thought it was cool because Dad wears his hair the same way,” she said, and Spider spluttured loudly.

Summary
“He’s my father. Quaritch is my father. How am I meant to live with that?!”
Neytiri froze, her blood ran cold, and she suddenly felt as if she were floating. Memories flashed behind her eyelids. The forest burning around her, Home Tree falling to the ground, her father dying in her arms, that same vitriolic anger burning and bubbling through her veins. She couldn’t see the resemblance, but the very idea that that demon still existed in some way fueled a burning fury.
“What?” she said very quietly, and Jake’s head snapped around to her. His eyes widened in surprise, and he stood to place his hands against her arms. But Neytiri only had eyes for the boy, who stared at her in terror and guilt. “What did you say?”
“I’m sorry,” the boy said, and if Neytiri was in the right frame of mind she’d be snarling at the idea of a child apologising for his very existence. “I didn’t know. Norm– he, he told me today because I found some photos. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.”
“You…” she snarled, pulling back her lips to expose her teeth. “You are never able to see my children again! Demon!”

Summary
A sharp, loud cracking noise, and Spider felt searing heat against the back of his leg. It burned and distracted him enough that he practically fell into the water, barely remembering to shield his mask with his arms in case it broke. He clenched his teeth at the pain he felt, the salt of the sea water entering the wound in his leg and causing a cold numbness in the skin. When he looked down, he first noticed a cloud of blood, but when he reached down to take a look, he didn’t notice a hole to denote a bullet wound, just a dark pink streak at the back of his leg.
