Things had gone wrong before. It wasn’t like this was the only time Face had been on his knees with a gun trained on him, or the only time he’d been thrown out in the elements to die of exposure. But he’d always had that hope that his unit was there. And he’d always had Hannibal, winking at him across the room, or putting a hand on his shoulder.
This time felt different. Face stared out around him at the familiar setting of a military camp from his prisoner’s place in the dirt, shoulders aching, and tried to shake the looming thought of memento mori.
