He wriggles his toes, feeling his environment. He quickly realises how much his surroundings are constricted, his legs are tightly bound and he is being cradled in someone’s arms. He opens his eyes and sees a woman leaning over him and realises she must be the one holding them. She’s humming softly with a warm and happy smile. He can see that her skin is clammy and there are bruises under her eyes, the eyes that are amber, golden-brown as well as smoky topaz, but that doesn’t dim her smile as she gazes upon the person in her arms. She’s white and her brown hair surrounds her face in messy curls.

Cliff Marleau can be a dumbass, it’s fair to say - anyone can, some people would claim it more likely for men, and some people would certainly claim that being in a profession that involves violence, speed, and sharp things, and a ridiculous among of travel all on a regular basis would make it pretty likely for someone to be a dumbass. He does dumb shit sometimes, but it’s usually pretty basic.
Actually, how this started was years ago, when he still felt just barely out of being a rookie himself and Coach asked him to keep a watch on their new Russian rookie Ilya Rozanov, now Boston’s captain and one of Cliff’s good friends.

He answered the phone, pressing it tight against his ear even as he maneuvered his way through the locker room and toward the hallway. “Hey. Is everything all right?”
There was a moment of silence, shaky and stiff that worried Scott more than the five separate calls did. Scott’s frown deepened, pulse beginning to hammer beneath his skin. He threw caution to the wind, unable to think clearly over the nausea beginning to roil in his gut. “Kip? What’s wrong?”
“Is this Scott?” An unfamiliar voice filtered through the speaker and into Scott’s ear, doing nothing to calm the anxiety slowly ratcheting up higher and higher within him.
Scott paused for a moment in the doorway, not caring if his teammates noticed him. “Who is this? What’s going on?”
“This is Kip’s dad.” Scott braced himself against the doorframe, stomach clawing its way up his throat.
