The scientist's eye fluttered open for the briefest of moments, his gaze locking with Medkit’s. The world seemed to pause around them, the wind silencing, the roses stilling, as though the very Inpherno was waiting for the moment to pass. Subspace’s eye held no fear—only acceptance, the quiet resignation of someone who had long since made peace with his fate. There was no anger left, no hatred, no regret. Just the quiet understanding that this was the way it had to be. Medkit could feel his grip tighten on the revolver, but his hand was shaking. His whole body trembled, but there was no turning back now. This was it. The moment had come.
Subspace squeezed Medkit’s hand once more, the pressure telling him everything he needed to know. The connection between them—fragile, fleeting as it was—was the last thing they shared. And then, without a word, Medkit pulled the trigger.
