Summary
They called her a queen, though she was not one: but the circlet of light on her head and the ceremonial robes she wore gave her the semblance of one to the Terrans in the city of Zsa, the Terrans who had been carried away from Old Earth when it was conquered by the Psyn.
She was not a queen, but the Terran Liaison to the Empress of the Psyn; and now she was no longer that.

Bookmarker's Notes
“I already have a garden,” He says, grinning a little lopsidedly. “You remember. This one—this one is yours.”
He takes another drag, and she thinks of Abel, her sower-son, green and dead. Impulsively, she leans in, kisses His cheek. He looks at her, with wide doe-eyes like Adam’s before he took his bite. “Am I your mother or your daughter?” she asks, just to hear Him laugh, just so they can say together, like a curse—
“Theology.”

In chilly Orkney, where the stench of sorcery blows in along with the North Wind, Gawain learned what it was to love the otherworldly.

Bookmarker's Notes
“Yes. If.” That is all, no anger or judgement besides; Gawain’s true love is nothing if not hopelessly, heartlessly fair.
He thinks of a life spent in parting, time and again, and of rending his heart open, time and again, and knows what answer he must make.
