Summary
No—he’s seen what it did to his best friend, Thomas Greenie. How Thomas had shut down and hasn’t spoken to either him nor Minho since being reaped himself two years ago and returning as the crowned victor. How Thomas is now nothing but a WICKED mutt, working on the same arenas he himself had fought to death in. He can’t let Lizzy go through that. He can’t let her go through all that alone. He can’t let her die.
And so Newt makes his decision. Teresa hadn’t even begun to pick out the district male’s name before:
“I volunteer as tribute!”
Or, when Newt’s 12 year old sister's name is drawn at the Reaping, Newt volunteers as the male tribute so that he can protect her through the Games and ensure she gets home, no matter what the cost. Even if it means reconnecting with his former best friend who's now his mentor and may or may not have a small crush on him that Newt is completely oblivious to.
