“You know this is doomed to fail, Your Highness," Shane said, his voice clipped.
"But what of our bond?" Ilya answered, the raw sound of agony bleeding from every word.
"Your Highness, I find the question irrelevant," Shane stated, his voice flat and perfectly controlled. "A bond is a pleasant memory, nothing more. And pleasant memories do not secure a throne."
"What if I left the crown? What if we left the kingdom together?" Ilya was desperate now, his voice cracking with the plea.
Refusing to let his resolve crumble, Shane hardened his expression. He knew that one sign of weakness, one flicker of want, and Ilya would drop everything he had worked for his entire life.
"Good night, Your Highness." Shane didn't wait for a response, turning and walking away, leaving a devastated prince in his wake.”

Summary
Sometimes Shane can't understand what Ilya is saying. Can't figure out how to get the sound from his ears to whatever part of his brain can translate the sounds he can recognize as English.
Sometimes it's easier when Ilya speaks Russian, when Shane knows he isn't expected to respond.
It's nice. But Shane doesn't think there's anything better than Ilya singing to him, soft and sure.
