Though Sunny had feelings for Basil, he didn't want to risk their friendship after spending so many years repairing their relationship post-truth. So Sunny had focused instead on being a decent college roommate, and a great friend.
But all it got him was front row tickets to watching a drunk Basil get hit on by random strangers at a party.
It was funny. When they were younger, Basil had always begged Sunny not to leave him. But ever since they came to university, Sunny often felt like HE was the one being left behind by his flowerboy roommate.

“He won’t even fight back! Fucking pansy!”Basil quivered with anger and his own sobs as he closed in on himself. What these idiots didn’t know is that pansies were some of the most resilient flowers he’d had the pleasure to grow.
Another kick plummeted into his gut.
No matter what seemed to happen to them, they always seemed to pop back.
A punch hit his jaw, and he tried feebly to bite out at the hand that did it.
His grandmother ran over a bed of them with her car one time. All the blossoms died, but the roots remained.
The same hand roughly gripped his face, their stubby fingers digging in, clamping his mouth closed like an iron vice.Rain, snow, even hail, those stubborn flowers just never seemed to die.
His hair was being grabbed and pulled. Basil cried out in pain. Won’t they leave? They won, just go…
Those stubborn flowers just wouldn’t die.

Summary
Most troubles seemed to always lead back to the lake. It was a place of peace and play. Rambunctiousness and refuge. For almost any occasion, if you wanted an escape from the world, the lake clearing would always be there, away from prying eyes. After such an explosion of thoughts and feelings, an escape was all that we needed to cool the tumbling turmoil that festered in our hearts.

A tenseness at the dinner table- then an argument among the family. Sunny runs from his house for a moment of peace, after once again feeling as though he himself was the wedge between him and his own happiness. Although it may sometimes only feel like a weak salve to his psyche while he was at his lowest moments, Basil's presence was always the way to tie Sunny back down to earth.Bookmarked by Minlamin
