Summary
“I do not know how to swim.”
The words come out in a rush, like a waterfall tumbling over rocks.
“No one knows,” Penelope adds miserably. “Not even Eloise.”
“I know, Pen,” Colin says, and his voice is as gentle as the lapping of water along the pond’s shore.
“H-how? All those summers we spent together. Why did you never say anything before?”
“Because you did not say anything, and I had no wish to embarrass or upset you. There is no shame, and it is never too late to learn.”
OR
Colin has been waiting for Penelope’s debut for years—finally, he will be able to court her properly. But when she flees the presentation hall, everything he hoped for shatters. One summer morning, a swimming lesson changes everything.

Summary
In the year 1822, Mister Colin Bridgerton makes a grand return to England after almost 7 years of self imposed exile and reconnects with his estranged friend, Penelope. Will he be able to break the walls she keeps building between them and mend the bridges she is intent on destroying?
“What’s stopping you from living your life then, Pen? You’re living alone, aren’t you? No mother watching over your shoulder. No husband dictating your choices…”
“I mean, I can live alone, yes, but I’m still tethered. To reputation. To expectations. To the knowledge that no matter how independently I breathe, I will always be the subject of whispered pity or amusement. A woman alone is never just alone—she is sad, or defiant, or pitiful… never simply herself.”
“Come with me. For a month or two. See the world outside Mayfair parlours and boring soirees. You said you wanted to feel free. Let this be that.”
“But how? Where would we stay? What would people say, Colin? I’m not naïve—I know how this would look. Who would even accompany me as a chaperone?”
“Spinsters do not need chaperones, Pen. You said it yourself once.”

Summary
Colin Bridgerton has lost his wife.
Well. Not so much lost her as he has misplaced her.
It is not the mask. When Penelope teases him for this later, Colin is going to make it very clear that it is no fault of the mask. It is the bloody wig she had put on in an effort to properly disguise herself from the ton. He has spent his entire adult life seeking out red hair, and now he keeps forgetting to look for blonde. It has always been red, the red haired girl across the street, the one he had fallen in love with so devotedly that it still feels like they exist in their own world every time they speak.

Summary
It amuses him greatly that the ton thinks he is the charming one in this marriage. For he has been outmatched from the start. They all have, really.
Colin makes Penelope wait. Penelope makes Colin pay. Fun is had by all, don’t worry.
