Summary
Shane hadn't planned to grow his hair out. It wasn't a conscious style choice the way some gossip blogs seemed to think it was. It just happened -- he and Ilya were outed online, the Voyaguers lost in the playoffs, his Montreal teammates broke his heart, he was traded to Ottawa, he moved in with Ilya and suddenly the season started. Hardly any time for coherent grooming choices. Now it's the fall before his second season with the Centaurs. They'd had a decent playoff run last spring, but now that Shane knew the team and knew his place on the team, he was ready to get down to business. He wanted to win the Stanley Cup for his hometown, his husband, and himself. He'd trained harder over the summer than he had in years. Training camp was starting next week, and Shane wanted to be ready in all facets of his life, wanted to show the hockey world that he was serious about being the best hockey player he could be. He's convinced the hair's got to go. Ilya makes it his mission to change Shane's mind.

Summary
No matter how much he loved his husband, Shane had always wanted to be a star hockey player first and foremost, not a 'gay hockey player' defined first by his sexuality.
He had also made peace with what their marriage meant, and the challenges they faced in hockey because of it; he had found happiness in the bubble they had in Ottawa with the Centaurs.
That safe bubble burst one day with an unexpected call from Hockey Canada, and by the time it was all said and done, there was going to be a picture of Shane beside ‘gay icon’ in the urban dictionary.

As if the nurse can read his mind, she chooses that moment to look over her shoulder and tell Ilya, “So, just as a head’s up, he’s still pretty loopy from the anesthesia and the pain medication. He’s up and aware but he’s a little, um…”
She pauses for a second, suddenly sheepish, and Ilya can’t wait to hear what the next words out of her mouth are about to be.
“He’s very chatty,” is what she finally lands on, and Ilya can’t help but bark out a laugh.
“And just what is he saying?” Ilya asks, lips spreading into a warm, fond smile, as he imagines all of the possibilities.
“Oh, nothing too crazy,” the nurse says, waving him off in a way that tells him she’s trying very hard to be nonchalant even as there’s an unmistakable edge of amusement curling around her words. “I’ve heard a lot about the adorable furrow you get in between your eyebrows when you’re worried though.”
Ilya wonders if it would be too rude if he broke out into a sprint and left Shane's lovely nurse in the dust.
Or: the one where loopy hospital Shane makes his second appearance and, once again, helps the boys find their way to a conversation they've both been wanting to have about their next chapter.
