Summary
"She thinks we're on a date," Emily said, when the woman had gone, around a spoonful of something with figs in it.
"We're two friends having dinner."
"At a candlelit corner table for two and a half hours."
"It's a small restaurant, they're all corner tables."
"You ordered me the exact side I would have ordered, if I'd been allowed to keep reading the menu instead of being informed I'd taken long enough."
"That's not a date, that's paying attention."
"Mm," said Emily, in a tone that conceded precisely nothing, and ate the fig dessert, and did not, Andy noted, ever actually get around to saying it wasn't.
--
More than a decade after Andy had left runway, a chance meeting at a bakery reunites her with Emily, freshly divorced and pregnant with her second child. What follows is, of course, a love story.

Summary
It was 7.23 p.m. when Andy finally put the marker cap back on with a loud ‘click’, took a few steps back until she stood against her desk, with her hands laying on it and slightly leaning back as she looked at the board. She had wrote, erased, wrote again, erased again, thrown the marker to the wall, remembered it was a glass wall, cleaned the ink stain on said wall, retrieved the marker, sat at her desk, banged her head on said desk, twice, walked back to the board, started writing again.
That’s how she found herself staring at a title, written in red - it read: “List of the reasons I’m not proposing to Emily” - and five numbered elements underneath.or
5 times Andy knows she wants to marry Emily + 1 time she does something about it

Summary
To anyone else, nothing has changed, but to Emily, the energy of the conversation has shifted. She sees her starting to get distant, not in the obviously flustered and sometimes frantic way Andy typically would when she feels uncomfortable. She’s conversational, expressive, and her voice has inflections in all the right places for good storytelling, but she’s not entirely present, like she has stepped back and is guiding the conversation from behind a glass wall.
It’s the first time Emily has ever seen this from Andy and she isn’t quite sure what to do with it, or the way she feels about seeing it. She sets the feeling aside for later.
--
Or the one where Emily realizes that Andy can, in fact, hide a feeling, and she doesn't know how to feel about it at the same time someone from Andy's past, who knows why Andy hides certain feelings, comes back into the picture and reconnects with Andy almost instantly, and Andy insists they're just really good friends.
Friends whose lives have intersected so many times that they've woven a pattern together that's uniquely theirs.
Just like Andy and Emily.

“I want the ring you held out to me when you proposed to me in our apartment two years ago. Not some replacement because I was stupid enough to lose the only materialistic thing that’s ever held any value to me.”
