Summary
Whenever you see an injured bird, your first thought is how vulnerable it is. How easy it would be to break it, to tear the flesh and bone and feathers, to wrench its wings from it’s body. The part of you that is still a war slave catalogs the weak points, the places to find as to tear if more easily. The beast thinks about how to use the flesh, the bones, the feathers. How to take every part of it for yourself.
You don’t listen to your first thoughts often.

Summary
Fear has dug it’s heads into the gyri of her brain, and caresses the sulci with delicate razor sharp fingers. Her thoughts fall disjointed, out of order, scattered. Primal panic overrides her higher brain functions, shuts off all unnecessary tools for survival.
She has lost her faith. And now all that’s left is the sensation of being followed. Of faintly hearing footsteps that stop whenever she stops walking, of flickering shadows and a sicking feeling in her chest. She has spent so much time under somebody else's thumb, so much time as a tool, a pawn, in somebody else's game. She though she escaped.

Summary
Waking up has never been this difficult in his life, Chris thinks distantly as he forces his eyes open, flinching against the bright lights. There’s a distant sound of a voice, and he can barely make out the words at first, even though it all gets clearer with every passing syllable. “Oh, Chris, you’re awake!” There’s a hand on his shoulder, gently stopping him as he struggles to sit up, and he doesn’t really have the energy to fight it so he complies.
When he groans there’s immediately a worried face in front of him, and he squints a little as he attempts to recognize them. “Claire?” It comes out a guess, more than anything. The person in front of him is Claire, he’s sure of it, but she’s… so old.

They stare at each other. Chris feels his heart break and reform in his chest.
He's lying there, displaced in time, bleeding with an infected gunshot wound, and he's asking after Claire.
