    Gotham is a city full of desperate people trying to survive against all odds, and Danny has become one of them alongside a mountain of traumatised Metahumans with the passing of the new Metahuman Protection & Re-integration Initiative. Under an already oppressive system with much larger players making their moves, all of them are about to get caught in the crosshairs…

    What do you do when what was meant to protect you is what is hurting you? What do you do when others would rather you didn’t exist? What is the right choice? When are our actions justified? What should we do with the shitty hand we’re dealt?

    An au where Danny has the same scar as Two Face and has run away to Gotham undercover as a meta to hide from his parents but keeps getting accidentally roped in with the bats’ rogues gallery, all the while with the Bat family hot on his heels.

    Danny smiles at him, a little shakily, and his voice is watery when he chokes out, "you really scared me, Tim. Don't do that again, secret identity or not."

    "I'll try," he promises, and knows by Danny's aggrieved sigh that his lack of commitment was noticed. Still, Danny kisses his forehead and sits on the bed carefully. He uses his free hand to dig through a prescription bag- not his usual pharmacy which is much closer to their home, but the one Bruce, Damian, and Alfred use on the other side of town.

    "You're taking these," Danny orders. "We can look up the ingredient lists if you want, first, but I've already checked and the pills match what they're supposed to look like, the amounts look good for your body weight and height, and B tracked down the entire shipping history to confirm."

    His paranoia is only matched by his father's, and matches well with Danny's overprotective steak. Tim didn't know he could love Danny more, but here they are. "Love you more every day," Tim grits out through a throat coated in dried blood and mostly immovable jaw.

    Summary

    Danny is just trying to survive his shitty afterlife in peace at this point. He was forced to leave his home dimension because the anti-ghost sentiments spiraled out of control, and before he knew it, nukes destroyed or poisoned everything and he was the only one still alive. After fighting his way back to the Infinite Realms, Clockwork to send him somewhere he can heal as he grieves.

    Gotham is not what he expects. The city spirit is tearing itself apart and Danny doesn't know how to help. Danny may have had a panic attack when he notices the changes to both of his forms and the colour difference of ectoplasm in this dimension, but on a humorous note, he finds out that the locals think he's a vampire. He figures that it's close enough to true and doesn't correct them.

    It's all fun and games til the local vigilantes find out about him.

    This is loosely based off of someone else's au where Lady Gotham makes ectoplasm red to fuck with Danny and my own post of Danny's forms swopping hair colour as Danny's human hair grays out with age and/or stress.
