Summary
Stede’s always loved the sound of Ed’s laugh. It’s a sound that reminds him that no matter how bad things get, there’s always something funny to be found on the other side of the sadness. Hell he must have heard it hundreds of times over the last five years of their friendship. But looking up at him from the bench where he’s frozen in the middle of lacing up his sneakers, he finds himself…seeing Ed’s laugh.

Summary
“I don’t…” Ed starts, but then he pauses, the words getting stuck in his throat. Brave man that he is, he closes his eyes, takes one deep breath, and tries again. “I don’t know what to do.”
It makes sense. It shouldn’t, not really, especially considering how they had just been lying here in silence and halfway to sleep not five minutes ago, but there’s a sort of helplessness in Ed’s voice that Stede understands perfectly. They’ve been here before.
“Alright, my love,” he murmurs, more to himself than to Ed, and begins to shift.
While Ed watches on in bewilderment, Stede sits fully upright in bed, and gently tosses the covers on his side away, exposing his legs.
Lightly patting his thighs in gentle encouragement, Stede says, “On my lap, darling.”
