Summary
Most people would think that the worst night of their life would be brought on by losing someone they loved– or realizing that their life was about to be ruined because of a financial crisis. Hell, getting stranded in the middle of the ocean with sharks slowly encroaching upon your raft wouldn’t even compare to this night. This night was fucked. And it can all be traced back to a single person’s careless and foolish choice.
AKA: I must break Jacob Custos and build him back better.

It’s 2008, and Robert Robertson III is trying to balance court-ordered community service, a disciplinarian father, and the suspicious honour of being Mechaman’s spawn. You know. Normal teen stuff. At a clean-up detail, he meets Sonar: a helmet-wearing hybrid with his own rap sheet and his own reasons for staying guarded. Unfortunately, they have way too much in common.

Or, 'What to Do When Your Boss Doesn't Suck Nearly as Much as He Could'
With Shroud dead and Robert's contract with the SDN expiring in a few months, there's nothing keeping him working with the Z-Team. And given the nature of some of their prior Dispatchers, Sonar decides that's unacceptable, and takes it upon himself to use his not-inconsiderable charms to convince Robert to stay.
Depending on how you define it, this plan meets with an unanticipated level of success.

As Robert stopped, his heart slammed against his ribcage. “I’m sorry?”
Sonar circled Robert and stopped in front of him. “You heard me, Robby. It’d be a hell of a lot less hassle than dealing with those two. Besides, they looked like they were getting along with each other back there."
Robert swallowed heavily, his attention locked on Sonar’s shoes. “This isn’t a very funny thing to joke about, you know.”
