Summary
One year ago, Jared lost his husband in an act of senseless violence. Stricken with grief, Jared has withdrawn from society and become reclusive, his only human interaction coming from his foster brother Chad, his florist friend Misha, and the occasional grocery store cashier – that is, when Chad can convince him to leave his apartment. If that wasn’t bad enough, now he’s being haunted by the ghost of his deceased husband, and Misha is the only one who seems to believe him – even if Misha's theories and superstitions make him a little, well, eccentric.
Jensen, on the other hand, is finally free of his own unhealthy relationship. Too bad being one half of the couple known as Jen-Jen drove him completely bat-shit crazy. And he is, if the disembodied voice that only he can hear and strange dreams are any indication. After all, Jensen is ninety-nine percent sure he’s not a ghost (despite what the voice claims), and he’s never been married to anyone named Jared, either.
This is a story about unlikely connections, second chances at love, and giving in and letting yourself be just a little bit crazy.

Summary

Summary
Jensen, still grief-stricken over the death of his husband, has been restless and moving around frequently since then. A new job lures him to Moose Lake, Minnesota, where he meets Jared who is living in a rundown trailer on an unkempt property with his dog. Jared is an enigma, living an isolated life. He is shy, socially awkward, and obviously ill and unkempt. His financial situation is precarious and his living conditions appalling. Jared has already suffered more losses and battled more life-threatening health issues than most people do in their entire lifetimes. He is insecure, lonely, and vulnerable, burdened with guilt and shame from his past experiences. Despite Jared’s appearance and circumstances, Jensen is inexplicably drawn to him and slowly gains his trust. This seemingly unlikely pair develops a deep, irrefutable, and undeniable bond. Together, they learn to let go, forgive, ask for, and receive help to heal. Most importantly, they learn that it only takes one person to change your whole world for the better if you follow your heart.

Written for the Alpha/Beta/Omega Bigbang Challenge. Jensen is a lonely omega who works as a librarian in Austin, TX. He spends his afternoons reading aloud to the local elementary school kids, wishing that his life were different and that he could have a child of his own, but its just not possible. He befriends Jason, a sweet bright little boy who loves to read and seems just as lonely as he is. Then he meets Jason's father, Jared, a handsome alpha who spends too many hours working at the hospital and, in Jensen's opinion, not enough time with his son. Jensen confronts him about it and they have words, Jared telling him in no uncertain terms to mind his own business. Jensen writes him off as a major prick, which is why he's not at all happy to see him at the library again the very next day - especially since Jensen's heat picks that moment to hit him hard. Jared steps up to help him through it, and as they learn more about each other he gives Jensen reason to hope that maybe the things he wants most aren't so far out of his reach after all.

In other words, he knew when people were lying.
This made him a valued resource to the FBI when they needed help cracking difficult cases. Jensen was glad to help, as long as they realized his superpowers came with a caveat.
Special Agent Jared Padalecki was a respected agent and gifted FBI profiler, currently leading a team tracking a serial killer. When his boss, SAC Jeff Morgan, decided to call upon an odd mathematician for help, Jared was skeptical as to how a college professor could be of any assistance. However, the agent soon became intrigued by the mathematician, and learned to value Jensen for his instincts, insights, and superpowers.
