    Summary

As Executioner he would be a pariah, an outcast. Radzig would never have to look upon the living face of his most embarrassing mishap for as long as he lived. Henry would be off, tucked away; safely outside the confines of town and hidden from the eyes of the world. Not even the latrine diggers would see him...

    ___________
After the sack of Skalitz, Henry approaches his father, the noble Sir Radzig, for aid. Though rather than taking on the mantle of squirehood, Henry instead finds himself shunted into the ostracised position of Rattay's local executioner - a perfect locale for hiding one's motifying baseborn son.

Exciled and outcast, Henry lives for many years alone. Until a chance meeting with a young nobleman changes everything...

A throne without a king, a hero without his sword, a knight without his love.

Hans’s secret is out. His world is in ruins. And Otto von Bergow is still reaching for power with both hands.
Sent to Moravia by Hanush and Radzig, Hans's mission seemed clear: feasts, speeches, careful smiles. Will sharp-eyed Jitka become his shield… or the blade at his throat?
Hans might have to stand on his own two feet now, but Henry left him more than his beloved sword. He left him a promise to return—and Hans’s blacksmith’s boy is a man of his word.

“Do you remember the Black Death?”

    Henry frowned. “What?”

“The Black Death,” Hans repeated, voice thoughtful, like he was turning something over in his mind. “Do you remember it?”

Henry stared at him. “That was fifty years ago.”

    “Yes.”

    “I don’t remember it.”

Hans tilted his head slightly against his arm. “Really?”

“No,” Henry said flatly. “Because I wasn’t alive.”

Hans was quiet for a moment. Then, calmly, “I was.”

Henry blinked again, slower this time. “You weren’t.”

“I believe I was,” Hans said, with quiet certainty.

Henry let out a breath that was half a laugh. “You weren’t even born.”

    “In this life,” Hans clarified.

Henry turned his head to look at him properly now.

Hans met his gaze with complete seriousness “I remember it,” he said. “Not clearly. But enough. I was ill. Very ill. And no one believed me.”

Henry raised a brow. “Sounds familiar.”

    Summary

“I don’t know,” Hans mumbled. “Is there anything you’re not comfortable with?”

Henry had a hard time picturing ever being uncomfortable around Hans. Out of all the emotions he’d suffered since meeting him, that wasn’t one of them.

“I don’t think so. And you?”

Hans was silent for a moment, eyes fixed on the windshield. And then, just as Henry was about to return his own gaze to the scenery, Hans spoke in a low voice, barely louder than the music coming off the speakers.

    “Can I kiss you?”

“Yes,” Henry said, the word escaping him before his heart had even had time to jump.

Hans finally glanced at him then, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. His freckles popped against the rosy of his cheeks. Henry had always liked the color his skin took on sunny days.

Then, Hans grinned. “Eager, are you?”

And there it was. No, Henry couldn’t picture being uncomfortable around Hans. Exasperated, however, he had no problems imagining.
