The black wedding ring on Jack’s finger is Robby’s, a remnant of their failed marriage. Though they’re no longer married, after PittFest, Jack recognizes Robby’s turmoil because he’d struggled similarly after losing his leg.

Summary
It wasn’t the first time, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last. It was ordinary, part of both their continued white-knuckled grip on the edge of life. Keeping it together. Sometimes you just couldn’t carry it alone. Sometimes you needed someone to stand by you, to fill the air with words until the world righted itself, to walk beside you back onto solid ground.
Sometimes, unfortunately, it was that person’s day off, and you had to drag yourself off the roof.
Jack kept drifting.
He wanted it all to stop.
He craved silence.
Stillness.
Darkness.
The world was too damn bright.

Jack has a rough night and goes to find Robby. Robby tries to keep Jack grounded, however he can.

Summary
Robby meets Jack on his first day of medical school, when he's twenty-four and standing in the doorway of their shared room at Pitt with a duffel bag on his shoulder and a cardboard box in his arms. His university-assigned roommate Jack Abbot, who their professors call by his legal name John, who his friends and the girls he flirts with call Abbot, and who Robby has only ever called Jack.

Summary
Robby sighed, and shook his head, hands scrubbing at his beard. “A wiser man would say that we’re using casual intimacy to hide from the emotional turmoil we should be working out in therapy,” Robby called out as Jack walked out the door.
The other man barked out a laugh. "Yeah, and when you find him, tell him I said hi."
(Or: Robby can't sleep, Jack decides to help. It goes exactly as well as you'd expect.)

“I distinctly recall extending an invite that you turned down.”
“I’m your attending.” Robby says in lieu of anything else.
The invite for drinks was for more than just drinks, then. Robby had suspected that, but he didn’t have any evidence to confirm it. Abbot looks about as straight as they come, military background and all, gruff and corn-fed. His lingering eyes defied that in ways Robby could never put a finger on, in ways he wouldn’t let himself.
Abbot shrugs, watching Robby closely, “I’m a consenting adult.”
Robby pulls in a deep breath, reading between the lines of those words isn’t hard, “I don’t have drinks with my residents.”
