“Please! Don’t do this!” He begs, breath coming out in ragged pants as he tries to plead with her, but she is fast approaching him, and it’s the first swipe of the blade across his ribcage when he says it, “Stop! Mom-” He cringes as the words come out, knowing they are wrong but also feeling right.
But it seems to placate her, and she pauses, petting his face softly and gently. “Mama’s just trying to help you, honey. You just have to let it out.”
The words cut deep into his core, latching onto something. The cord snaps. And for the first time, Tyler transforms on his own.

He ponders it, momentarily transported back to happier times. Quiet times when his dad actually tried to be a father. Back when he actually cared. Very few moments, very small moments, but moments all the same. He recalls holidays at the Weathervane, where he got to participate in the holiday spirit at work and for once, he felt included. Warmth from small moments with friends, with new friends he had only just met before things all went wrong.
The warmth drains from him, cold rushing in, prickling at his bones. Before he turned into a monster, before he betrayed everyone, before his dad died, and before his mom died for the second time.
When his eyes open, he's alone again, in a stupid apartment in a stupid city he’s never been in before.

"After years of treatment, observation, and controlled rehabilitation, the decision has been made—both by our internal review board and the state authorities—that Mr. Galpin no longer presents a danger to himself or to others." Now, he has been set to be released on his own recognizance, as fully rehabilitated.
To say the least, Wednesday has her doubts.

Something twisted hard and sudden in the center of her chest—sharp enough to steal her breath for half a second. Not pain, exactly. Closer to the ache of a bruise pressed too roughly, old damage flaring under fresh pressure.
“I’m getting married tomorrow,” she said. Flat. Final. The words landed between them like stones dropped into still water.
“You told me to.”
The visor dipped. A small, almost imperceptible motion. Not quite a nod. More like capitulation caught halfway.
“I know.”
