After a difficult run-in with an assclown ruins his date night with Cait, Vi's growing confidence in his identity is thrown off-kilter. The world is loaded with reasons to not bother being who he really is, and plenty of people who'd rather he wouldn't. Cait tries to help, but Vi struggles to let her. His floundering leads him to a surprising conversation, and an important realisation. And also, happiness.

Vi’s expression is clouded with lust and something more ambiguous, but her hand remains, thank god. “I don’t fuck women with girlfriends. I don’t like that they have girlfriends and the girlfriends don’t like me.”
“You sound very knowledgeable about the situation. It sounds like you do, in fact, fuck women with girlfriends.”
“This is a new rule. It’s one I haven’t had to enforce yet.”

Dr. Kiramman steers her through the chaos and plants her in a chair. Does something to her arm that hurts like fuck, then drapes her in bags of ice and wraps her in a sling. Blinds her with a pen light—“Called it,” she mumbles when he confirms she’s concussed—and presses two pills and a warm mug into her hand. It smells herbaceous. Familiar.
“I brought the good stuff from home,” Dr. Kiramman confesses, and it takes her a moment to understand he means tea. “Extra honey for you. I know you haven’t acquired the taste.”
He’s right in that she only actually drank it once, the first time it was offered—the afternoon they spoke to the Council, several lifetimes ago. But she tasted it just this morning in Caitlyn’s mouth, grassy and sweet. So she pops the pills and takes a sip. Tries not to think about whether that terrified kiss over breakfast was their last. “I want to see her.”
After the war, Vi and Cait recover, and rebuild.
