Summary
Steve arrives at Max’s trailer in record time, breaking nearly every driving rule in the book on the journey. The lights are on despite it being past midnight, and Steve can hear some loud crashing sounds even from where he’s standing outside.
“Fuck it,” Steve says, deciding he better go in. He runs into the trailer at once, bat in hand, thanking whoever left the door unlocked.
He’s taken aback at the scene. Max is kneeling on the ground, pleading with her mother to calm down. There’s shattered glass everywhere on the floor, broken beer bottles lined up against the walls. Max is barefoot, only wearing thin pyjamas, and is slightly shaking. The whole room stinks of alcohol.

Dustin frowned, dissatisfied. “Can you two drop me off when you take Eddie home, then?”
Eddie gazed evenly at the teenager for a minute before realizing Dustin was not telepathically understanding why Eddie might want to be alone with Steve for a while. He sighed, looking at Steve. “You’re the babysitter.”
Steve groaned. “Whatever. Yeah, we’ll drop you off when I take Eddie home later.”
Dustin began gushing out thanks, which Steve brushed off. For all his posturing, he really didn’t normally mind driving the kids around. It meant he always knew where they were, who they were with, and that made him feel like they were hopefully a little safer. Tonight, however, he didn’t want to play babysitter. He and Eddie had plans that very definitely did not involve their chaotically adopted children.

Three shots ring out.
Steve hears them before he feels them; a warm, wet pain burning in his torso, intolerably excruciating.
There’s a bundle of squawks and screams, outbursts of panic and anger, and it’s only when Hopper falls forwards to take Steve up into a slightly rough, protective hold, does he realize that two of those shots have lodged themselves in his own flesh and bone. (Realizes that he’d moved, instinctively, to shield El, despite never having spoken to her, who’d the gun had been so precisely pointed at, aimed for.)
Steve Harrington watches his own blood pool and trickle over a series of hands pressed against him, small and large, soft and rugged, and for a moment, wants to stay like this. He can’t.
