    Summary

His heart stuttered, filling with a foreign warmth, something that felt so right that Crowley couldn’t imagine how he’d not noticed its absence. His breath caught, and his mind spun, and he could only stare at Aziraphale with a wonder and affection. A greater care than Crowley had known before, more potent than that he’d held for humanity, yet deeper rooted than he’d held for any individual - as though to remove it would tear apart some of his soul.
    ...
Aziraphale’s breath caught as he suddenly processed the warmth in his chest, the raw emotion clouding his gaze as he could only stare at the demon responsible. His mind spun as it hit him just how long that feeling had sat in his chest, having gone unnoticed for so long due to how right the sentiment felt, like it was meant to be there.

Was this what love felt like?

    Summary

Beelzebub stalked the room, and if it weren't for the aggression in their footsteps, Crowley would've said they were pacing. He wasn't restrained by anything except the generic sigils binding him to Hell, leaving him free to make a run for another part of Hell, yet he made no such attempt.

The reason they didn't bother with further restraints was because Beelzebub knew Crowley wasn't that stupid. A twisted compliment, and a completely correct assumption; he was smart enough to know when he was trapped.

    Summary

It always came back to this.

Crowley couldn’t exactly have stated how long it had been since the last time, but it had been a while. It certainly felt like it had been a while, yet he’d learnt over the years that when it came to this, his definition of age didn’t quite align with that of the rest of the world.
    ...
It always came back to this.

Aziraphale supposed it was inevitable, really. Suffering was a gift She had bestowed upon humanity, and was as necessary as pleasure, therefore it was only right that he ensured its presence

    Summary

He had to believe She wasn’t cruel. There was nothing else conceivable, and all the cruelty that existed in war and conflict was simply a reflection of Her love. To fight Lucifer was an act of love from Heaven, trying to save his soul and those of all the Fallen.

Crowley stared at the bodies on the battlefield and didn't know that he could blame it on love.

With nothing to see other than torn wings and pooling blood, Crowley really couldn't figure out where love was meant to fit into this.

    Summary

Aziraphale would find himself on his knees, and the way they ached suggested he’d already been in that position for an indeterminate amount of time. He could scarcely feel his legs, yet to shift position would send throbbing aches throughout his skin, so it was much easier to remain in place. To move would be wrong, so he raised his hands above and prayed.
    ...
His hands would ache from being raised for too long, and his knees hardly seemed real, and then he would blink and suddenly he was no longer there. If it weren’t for the bruising on his knees, he would question whether it had ever happened, or if he’d made it up.

He did that a lot these days.

    Summary

They got a whole, blissful moment before Crowley paused while raising his drink to his mouth.

“Something’s wrong,” he murmured, instinctually moving to get up. As he did so, a wave of dizziness washed over him so suddenly and sharply that the demon would’ve immediately toppled if it weren’t for the sudden presence of Aziraphale’s arms keeping him upright. His vision blurred, and he could vaguely feel the wall against his back as he fell against it.

    Summary

Crowley had dreamed of redemption, of somehow crawling out of the pit towards the light, of receiving her forgiveness and being reinstated as an angel. He spent a long time there, broken prayers leaving his mouth and surely never reaching Heaven, before he gave up on the idea that he was redeemable.

This was an idea reinforced by almost every demon he met ; Lucifer, Beelzebub, Hester - from every low-level demon to all the high-level ones, that permeating confidence in such a simple conclusion. Of course Crowley believed it - it was just one fact in a growing list of new facts meant to patch the gaping hole left in his sense of self. He was a demon, he’d fallen from God’s grace, he was unforgivable and certainly irredeemable.

    Summary

It was out of sight, and yet Aziraphale couldn’t scrub the harsh imagery from his mind. It wasn’t an open wound, that much the angel could establish, and yet the pair of ragged lines running down Crowley’s back seemed angry, raw. As though it was still unhealed, marring the skin with scar tissue seemingly unwilling to mend, tearing gaps in the flesh with the absence of what was meant to be.

    Summary

Crowley heard a light thud on the ground behind him. It was an almost imperceptible sound, and to humans it surely wouldn’t have been audible over the sounds of birdsong. Luckily, he wasn’t a human. It was a sort of bird, he managed to quickly determine. That much was evident from the feathers and wings, although the latter didn’t seem to have been much help considering the creature had fallen.
    ...
Blue eyes met yellow ones, a cry for help emerged from somewhere within the ball of feathers and was almost immediately swallowed by the dense garden, and Crowley’s mind was made up.

    Summary

Everytime he returned, Crowley noticed something different. It was small details, like the placement of a coffee table or an armchair being moved, but it was all those small little details that betrayed the sanctity of the location. It was books being sold, albeit not many, but far more than ever would’ve been before. Slowly, the place was becoming less and less of the bookshop Crowley remembered.

He would enter just to absorb the atmosphere, and then mourn all the ways in which the atmosphere was different. Gone was the gentle, homely warmth and it was replaced with an unnatural, holy cleanliness that seemed so wrong in the bookshop.

    Summary

It developed into a paranoia of sorts.

Flinching at any form of touch, regardless of if it came from person or object. Glancing towards the exits in any small room, then any enclosed space, then anywhere at all. Initially, it was just odd to observe, but before long it was just outright unnerving. It was something thinly veiled, where all the sharp edges still poked out if you paid attention to where the fabric tore.

Crowley didn’t know how to fix it, and he hated his inability for either remedy or ignorance. Everytime he aimed for the latter, the small differences stood out like a blaring alarm, ringing around Crowley’s head until it drove him insane.

    Summary

To be able to tarnish his corporation was a luxury humans didn’t seem to understand, and yet it was an essential one all the same. To keep him sane, to tear apart something meant to be divine surely would leave a tear on his soul that could mark him as distinct, as wrong, as un-demon.
    ...
It was an act of violent spite, each fibre of collagen a ‘fuck you’ to She who had created the whole. It was like adding patches to a jacket to personalise it; to make a patchwork person from scars and Hellfire and love, when all it was meant to be was evil.

    Summary

    “Fuck you!”

Crowley waved an empty bottle at the sky as he yelled, and any passer-by would’ve thought he was insane. They wouldn’t have necessarily been far off the mark, especially the more-religiously inclined who might’ve considered that the crazy man on the street was cursing at God for his poor hand in life.

In reality, Crowley couldn’t say if he was yelling towards Heaven or Alpha Centauri, or somewhere else entirely. The alcohol in his system didn’t allow for that kind of coherent thought, he just knew that the recipients certainly weren’t on Earth.

    Summary

The whole ordeal had started a few months prior when he’d been called to Heaven for a disciplinary notice. Apparently one too many ‘frivolous miracles’ had raised the ire of Michael, who drew opposition to the idea of rewarding those already going to Heaven among Aziraphale’s admissible habit for indulgences.
    ...
Although the fainting had begun a while before, it wasn’t something disruptive enough to Aziraphale’s normal routine for him to pay it much mind. It became just another thing, along with tiredness and coldness, and the occasional clump of hair falling out. On some level, Aziraphale knew that it wasn’t just a human thing, and knew that it was probably attributable to the lack of food.

Knowing something, of course, was wildly different to doing anything about it.

Aziraphale paused for a moment before carrying out the motion and drawing a line through the 3 circles. “Well played.” He wiped his hand over the grid, erasing the lines in the dirt and returning it to its prior state. “Another game?”

“This is all on you lot,” Crowley grumbled. “Buncha God-crazed zealots - you should’a written the Bible clearer. No, I don’t want to play another game.”

    “You seem aggrieved.”

    Summary

“Mother, forgive thou.” The words sat heavy on his tongue as he laid the knife before the altar. “Grant my soul peace in eternal darkness. Allow me that mercy.”

Sharp stabs of pain would shoot through his lungs as he breathed the air of his own false sanctity. His lips stung with every word formed, as though they were due to bleed and yet no blood would fall. His legs remained stuck in the limbo of white-hot burning, as if lost in the moments before nerves would break and skin would melt away. His corporation remained sickeningly intact.

There was a certain ritual to it.

    Summary

Months prior, the doctors had sworn they’d removed the cancer; that Nyssa needn’t worry, as they both had plenty of time left. Albeit they hadn’t said that, except Nyssa had interpreted any time left as all the time in the world. Even then, as they both grew older and time took its toll, logically Nyssa knew that one day their time would run out, yet that still operated under the assumption that they had time.

They were running out of time.

    Summary

She was wearing paper-thin robes that distinctly weren’t her own clothes - that was the first thing she noticed, and she fought down the immediate panic of not knowing where she was. The second thing she noticed was how goddamn much her wrists hurt. That realisation was enough for Mel to connect the dots as to her location, and shame instantly shot through her.

    She should’ve cut deeper.
