'It had never taken anyone this long to write a phone number. Both because Robin was really trying to make sure her handwriting was legible, and because she was having trouble remembering what her phone number even was at 7:47 in the morning while she held Nancy Wheeler’s hand. Not for any weird reason, they had just never touched hands when their lives weren’t in danger. It was different, that was all.
“I think that’s right.” She mumbled as she dropped Nancy’s hand and offered the pen back.
“You think?” Nancy smiled at her, teasing, pulling a smile through the cloud of fatigue that had been keeping Robin’s face in an unconscious grimace all morning.
“It’s so early…” She said by way of explanation. Nancy chuckled.'

Summary
The world is falling apart and the Byers have been living in the Wheeler household much to Will's dismay. Stress piles up, secrets pile higher, and Mike and Will's relationship teeters between friendship, denial, and something neither of them has the courage to name.
A single night crosses a line they can't uncross and Will's long-rooted feelings only intensify, especially when Mike's affection only surfaces through the hazes of stolen wine or when he falls apart.

It was an accident. Really it was. Gun to her head that’s what she’d say. That’s her story and the details may be a little fuzzy and no one needs to know how she ended up at the end of his journal. But could someone really blame her? She had missed out on so much of their friend group dynamics after being in a coma for so long. Reading the last entry couldn’t really hurt anyone. It’s a victimless crime, she reasoned.

Max burst out laughing, “and you're the Paladin? Oh my God Mike-,”
“The hell is so funny?” Mike snapped.
“You don't even?” Max scoffed. This is why Mike didn't like talking to Max. She spoke as if she knew some joke that flew right over Mike's head, and Mike had a feeling he was the joke.
“Mike. I don't know how to tell you this so I'm just gonna say it,” Max started, “The Paladin is in love with The Sorcerer.”
Mike groaned. They stayed silent for a moment. Max waiting for a reply and Mike cringing at the revelation that maybe this ran deeper than he thought. Maybe the critics weren't wrong. Maybe Heather, along with the rest of his fans, hadn't been crazy after all and hadn't completely misunderstood the text he'd spent seven years writing.
“Why does everyone keep saying that?” He finally grumbled.
Or, In 1996, Mike releases a book inspired by the party and their adventures. A small but loud fandom forms around shipping The Paladin and The Sorcerer. But, that was all wrong. Mike had never been in love with Will, had he?

In the end, the death of their friendship wasn’t a loud one; there was no screaming fight or dramatic climax. It took its final breaths in the absence of the shrill ringing of the telephone and ‘leave a message after the beep, and I’ll return your call’s that were never returned. It bled out in eerie silence without the click-clacking of the typewriter, and to letters that were thrown into the wastebasket instead of sealed into envelopes.
It suffocated because of the way Will was always too busy, and Mike was always too scared, and the distance that stretched between them was always too wide.
So, when Dustin announces on a random Saturday in December that the entire party is visiting, and Mike is expected to join, he isn’t jumping for joy at the thought of seeing his friends for the first time in too-many-years.
No.
Mike is terrified because he’s going to see Will Byers again. And the thought of that scares him more than any Demogorgon or shitheadded vine-bodied otherworldly demon ever did.

“You’re not boning, though, right?” he says, suddenly. He doesn’t know why he feels such an urge to bring it up again, as if the thought of Mike boning is not something that is CODE RED #1 at the top of Will's list of things to absolutely never think about. But also. Look–
“What? No, of course I’m not boning,” Mike splutters, turning a violent shade of scarlet, “how would I even hide that from you, I’m with you all the time–”
And then he falls silent, so fast that Will gets tonal whiplash from how fast Mike just went from saying boning over and over again to just clamping his mouth shut and staring at the wall across from them.
Will's trying his hardest to make it through fall semester in one piece. Unfortunately for his degree, he's being haunted by maybe-feelings for his best friend (metaphorically), and also a maybe-ghost with rather abysmal fashion sense (literally).
