“We are never going to win their trust and love like this,” Alina insisted. “Trust can’t grow on blood-soaked soil!”
“We don’t need their trust. Or their love. We need their loyalty,” Aleksander said coldly. “Hundreds of years have taught me that.”
“Hundreds of years have taken your compassion,” Alina hissed, struggling hard to keep her light inside. “You still can’t trust me enough to tell me about your plans. We are not working together. We are two sides of a coin, with a wall towering between us. I agreed to this marriage because you promised me things would change. Now tell me. How are things supposed to change, if you always stay the same?”
Alina and Aleksander have an argument right before Aleksander leaves to retrieve a couple of captured Grisha from Fjerda. He returns severely injured and Alina reflects on her role in their arrangement.
