“I’m gonna need a little more than that, baby.”
Steve sighed, leaning back against the edge of the bed. “I don’t want to work minimum wage or climb the corporate ladder or whatever, I want… I want something that makes me feel the way you do when you’re on stage. I want to feel like it means something that I’m still kicking.”
“What do you want to do?”
“You’re gonna laugh.”
“You planning on becoming a comedian?”

Summary
Even when his parents forgot to call for his nineteenth birthday, even when Nancy looked past him to gaze at Jonathan with genuine affection, and even when Dustin rolled his eyes when Steve couldn’t follow the threads of their conversation, Steve had comforted himself: at least he had his looks.
But not anymore.
Or, after the events of season four, Steve struggles to come to terms with the scars on his body. Having always prided himself on his good looks, Steve finds that his visible injuries take a major toll on his sense of self-worth and toss him headfirst into a spiral of self-hate. What follows is the progression of Steve’s grief and Eddie’s role in this journey.

Eddie thinks that he’s probably judged Steve too quickly. He thinks Steve’s probably full of surprises, if the past two years are anything to go by.
And then, of course, Steve just has to prove him right by stepping out of his BMW in a full sailor suit fantasy that not even the most depraved recesses of Eddie’s mind could have cooked up. Jesus. He’s got the little hat and everything. Cute tiny shorts, too, that are regrettably not as short as the ones included in the Hawkins High gym uniform, but still short enough for Eddie to be able to appreciate Steve’s legs. He has nice legs. Good knees. White socks pulled halfway up his calves, for some reason, stark against his golden tan skin. Wispy little hairs that probably go up his thighs. Eddie needs to stop looking at his legs.
“Eddie Munson,” Steve calls as he approaches, his voice all easy and light like they’re actually friends. “Hi.”
Eddie blinks at him.
Because Eddie's life can never be normal, the summer of '85 finds him working a firework stand just outside of Starcourt Mall, catching up on school work, and tutoring Steve Harrington in all things D&D.

Eddie doesn’t like showing it when he’s scared. Wayne always knows, though. He knew every time Eddie appeared on his doorstep with no warning, small and trembling with a dirty, oversized backpack packed with snacks and worn stuffed animals. He knew when Eddie was taller, a little bit too skinny and too tough for his age, when his dad finally ended up in prison and the government finally let Wayne's kid be his kid. He knew when Eddie was in middle school, friendless and angry and paranoid, when Wayne stumbled upon a stash of porno mags while he was looking for drugs.
So he knows now.

Steve and Eddie are friends. Ever since Steve's been getting confused over the kids' nerdy stuff, Eddie has stepped up to help. After a particularly bad night, the two form an even closer bond.
Excerpt:
Dustin’s voice drifted to them from the kitchen, “You wouldn’t understand, Steve.” Robin giggled, along with everyone else. But, Eddie saw the smallest, ever-so-slight glimmer of sadness in the man’s eyes.
He really wanted to know, Eddie realized.
The thought was enough to make him call out to Dustin, “Quit acting like you know what you’re talking about. You’re all about to die because Will is a way better DM than me and you got too comfortable,” then, he turned to Steve pointedly, “They’re screaming because Wheeler’s heroics just got him murdered and now they have no solid source of damage outside of Lucas’s ranger.”
He heard offended gasps from behind him and ignored them. Because the smile that spread across Steve’s face confirmed Eddie’s decision.

There’s a beat of silence between them, during which Eddie surreptitiously pinches his thigh to make sure he’s not dreaming and Steve’s face turns an alarming shade of cherry red.
“Oh my god,” Eddie finally exhales, “are you serious right now?” He splays his hands out on the counter and leans toward Steve with a shit-eating grin. “Captain Steve—well it certainly has a ring to it.”
Five times Eddie sees Steve in his Scoops Ahoy uniform, and one time he sees him out of it.

Steve shrugs, heart jumping a little in his chest. He can't help but feel decidedly put on the spot.
“Just do.”
She sighs and—with what looks like immense effort—rolls her head along the wall to look at him with a sad expression.
“What’s holding you back, Steve?” She asks, eyes wide and concerned (and maybe a little unfocused) as they flit over his face.
Steve thinks of Dustin, of their conversation a few weeks ago, how he’d decided to be more open with the people in his life—the people who mattered—and takes a deep, steadying breath.
“Barb Holland.” He admits quietly.

Wayne lets the front door swing shut behind him, rattling and smacking into the frame audibly.
“Jesus, Munson!” A voice rings out — the freezer fiend’s, and definitely not Eddie’s. “Took you god damn long enough!” The head finally pops out of the freezer. “I got tired of waiting and — oh.”
The stranger’s hand slips from the handle and the freezer door thumps shut. As does the stranger’s mouth when he looks right into the face of, not Eddie Munson as expected, but Wayne Munson.
Wayne briefly recognizes him as the Harrington boy.

And again.
And fucking again, and he drags himself out of bed with a string of muffled curses, curving an arm around his stomach and hobbling into the kitchen, yanking the phone off the receiver.
“Fucking what?!” He snarls, and for one too-long moment, there’s silence.
And then–
“Is that how you greet everybody?”
Eddie freezes. Pulls the phone away from his body to stare at it, like it’ll make more sense if he can see it. Tucks it cautiously back against his ear.
“Harrington?”
