“Well, how does he know you love him?”
Neil scoffed. Love was such a trivial word. Meant for greeting cards and hallmark movies. A platitude to round out an apology, or to spice up a declarative speech. It was nothing. His and Andrew's relationship was beyond such trivial and mundane classifications such as love or no love, but on some level, Neil knew it was also not inaccurate. He wouldn't admit that though, how embarrassing.

Neils eyes were locked onto the screen. He was fully captured by the sights and sounds. He put a few pieces of popcorn in his mouth absentmindedly, not tearing his eyes away from the screen in front of him. He leaned forward, pulling on the blanket draped across them both, taking in the scene change with rapturous attention.

It had never been on purpose that his and Neil's relationship was a secret. It's not his fault that Aaron was as dense as a brick wall. Andrew was fucked up, he knew that. For once in his life, he finally had things to hold onto and yet, still, he was tearing himself to shreds to be able to make it through the day. Like he was a fucking teenager again. Shouldn't he have grown out of this by now?

Predictably, Neil’s automated voicemail message answers for him. The number you’re trying to reach is unavailable at this time. The message runs through its spiel, informing Andrew that he can leave a message after the beep.
Goodbye hovers on his tongue. It’s the least that Neil deserves from him. There are so many more things to be said.
Andrew shuts his phone without leaving a voicemail. He drops his phone onto the counter and slips a knife out of its sheath.
Right before spring break during his fourth year at Palmetto, Andrew Minyard attempts suicide. Now everyone has to figure out how to move forward from here.
