Ilya hums, playing the card he's been considering for this entire conversation. “We could make more interesting, yes? A bet.”
“A bet,” Shane repeats, eyes flashing. “Like what?”
The reporter cuts in. “What about wearing the other player’s jersey?”
They both turn to her, and Shane says, “Like, the loser wears the winner’s jersey?”
“Maybe at the next game in a couple of months?”
“Is a good idea,” Ilya muses, nudging Shane’s elbow. “You will look better in my jersey than in Montreal jersey.”
Shane makes a low noise, his eyes holding a bit of a spark when he looks back to Ilya. It’s what Ilya was hoping for—the tiniest crack in the mask. He can see a hint of exasperated affection around the corners of Shane’s eyes, a little bit of fire burning just beneath the surface. It sends a thrill down Ilya’s spine, and he wonders if Shane will be snarky when Ilya gets him naked tonight.
“That’s not happening,” Shane replies, shaking his head. “Because you’re not winning.”

If the percentage of gay ex-boyfriends Rose has had was anything less than 70%, or if her self-esteem had been any lower, she might have been offended or hurt right now.
The realization had started slowly.
And still, even now, her own experience with Shane and what she knows of him only allows for the picture to change slightly and become one of him actually enjoying sex, but not anything beyond that. He is still socially uncomfortable and hates talking about sex except for that one joke that started out as one of the worst sentences Rose thinks she’s ever uttered out loud. The shy and hesitant version of Shane is still firmly cemented in her mind.
Rose is curious, though. She never really stops being curious.
It’s why she’s standing here, hidden, not moving a muscle or making a sound as she becomes an accidental voyeur of Shane and Ilya as Shane rides Ilya on the couch.

Shane has been so happy to be moulded by Ilya, pushed, pulled and prodded. He never really considered how easy and natural it has always felt because it has never felt otherwise. He likes it when Ilya guides him into doing what he wants: is happy to beg, to stave off an orgasm, to perform and show off for Ilya.
Now? Shane wonders, what is the difference here? What is new about this? Shane looks at the love of his life and all the little things he keeps in his heart about Ilya. The tunnel vision clears somewhat, and Shane thinks, oh, he needs it, like how I need it. Ilya isn't just a happy participant in Shane's inherent submissiveness; he's actively seeking it

Shane somehow doesn't realise that Ilya likes Shane's submissiveness because it makes him feel important etc. He catches on, and they have very sloppy sex about it.

"Later,” he mouthed at him, and Ilya puffed up his cheeks and pouted before slamming the door shut behind him.
