Summary
Anthony is a prince in love with a commoner, Siena Rosso. Kate is a princess, betrothed to the Bridgerton royal family as part of a political alliance, the engagement manufactured in their youth to stave off a military conflict between the two nations. Upon meeting they despise each other, for Anthony’s heart is with another and Kate would have preferred the independence of royal spinsterhood to being under the control of a husband, particularly one so culturally different from herself. They’re forced to marry by their respective families and the political machinations to prevent war, famine, and disaster for their nations, as each country has what the other needs to prosper economically. But the manufactured peace for their countries does not translate to peace for the newlyweds, who, sent away from all they know on an extended honeymoon in the hopes of securing an heir that will bring the countries closer over a beloved child, butt heads during every waking moment. When Kate discovers his heart will never be hers, she realizes more and more that she wishes it could be and believes him lost to her forever. Or is he?

“Even more so that you were to Edwina I should imagine.”
“Then I shall quiver at her mercy,” Kate replied, grinning at the image of tiny Hyacinth Bridgerton guarding a tower with Anthony leaning out of the window as if a damsel.

She plants her foot and grips one of the branches and pulls herself up, and from there, it is just a matter of moving higher, making the right steps and grabbing the correct holds.
She knows Anthony is behind her, unwilling to look as though he is less capable than her, by the quietly muttered curses and whispered instructions. She knows he is not talking to her purely because he is whispering.
Finally, she finds a place to stop, resting her back against the main trunk of the tree and letting her legs rest across two branches. She reaches up, and pulls an apple from the leaves, biting into it.
It is still a little early in the season, but the apple is delicious nonetheless.
“You managed to keep up with me,” Kate muses, watching Anthony sit precariously in a nest of branches growing close together.
“You say that as if it was difficult,” Anthony teases, raising an eyebrow.
