He doesn’t know why he says it. Doesn’t know why his chest warms at the surprised stillness that follows.
Beside him, Alastor gives a soft scoff beneath the humour. ‘Flattery? Really? I’m beginning to worry. Next, you’ll start saying you enjoy my company.’
‘I do,’ slips out before he can stop it. It’s simple. Quiet. True in a way that startles him.
Alastor’s laugh comes low and dangerous, but there’s a tremor under it, something almost shy. ‘Careful now. If you keep talking like that, I might think you’re attempting to seduce me.’
Silence pulses between them, thick and charged.
‘Lucifer. Are you?’
