"Shhhh.” Ena balks as a pale hand snakes up from behind her and promptly covers her mouth. “Be still.”
“Mmmmhmm—!” Embarrassment and something else flares from her pores. She grips onto Mafuyu’s wrist, tries to pull it away, but goddamn that girl is strong.
“Rattlesnake.” Mafuyu says, or rather mumbles, quiet and deadly. Right beside her ear.
Ena can not even think about the very real rattlesnake right at their feet, slithering through the sand, when Mafuyu just did– did that.
Her cheeks heat instantly. Mafuyu’s fingertips are lightly calloused, and they grate satisfyingly on Ena’s skin, and her hand is long, slender, perfectly manicured, painted pastel pink only because Mizuki begged her. The skin on skin contact is— is—
Ena thinks she must be, quite literally, the shade of tomatoes.
Or: Ena and Mafuyu fall just right into each other. Maybe this harsh summer outback did something to their brains.

Summary
Just as Ena finds happiness with Niigo, she soon gets rejected from her dream university, gets rejected by Mizuki, and discovers Niigo has been lying to her all along about little things, keeping it away from her.
As she loses hope, passion, and happiness and as doubt clouds her mind, she starts to distance herself from everyone around her and spirals into an episode of self-hatred and abandonment, deciding to end her suffering by her own hands.
Time is ticking for her friends and Niigo to save her, but the guilt within them is kicking in when they realize all of this was due to a lack of communication.
