A soft kiss is pressed to Arthur’s cheek. A pause. Then, a voice. “Here you are. I’ve been looking for you.”
(Alfred, who at only twenty-four murdered the then Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Spades and his immediate family in cold blood, stands before Arthur as the incumbent King of Spades with a warm smile.)
The artificial Spade Insignia embedded on Arthur’s chest throbs at the presence of the King of Spades with elation and fondness and love and guilt—the emotions, while not entirely Arthur’s own, still form part of them.
“Your Majesty,” Arthur greets softly, “do you need me for something?”
The smile on Alfred’s lips widens tentatively. “Do I need a reason to want to see my Queen?”
The ascension of Alfred F. Jones as the King of Spades was steeped in blood. The ascension of Arthur Kirkland as the reluctant Queen of Spades was steeped in betrayal.
In the aftermath of it all, they find absolution in themselves and in each other.
