It had been two months since returning to London when Charles brought up Edwin's love confession. It was a slow day with little cases, Crystal's off at college, swamped with so much paperwork and overdue homework that she's complained many times that being both a full time member of the agency and a sixth form student is too much for her. "It's either spend less time with the agency get held back a year and I would rather be possessed again than have to do that." She had said bluntly. She gave them some chunky, older cellphone to use in case of an emergency, which they've since made a scale for to determine when it's alright to ask her for help, but other than the occasional consult, it's just him and Edwin again.
It's almost strange to be alone more often than not these days, even if Charles has been missing spending time alone with Edwin. It's just.. there's some weird tension between them now, or maybe that's just Charles. Edwin is a bit awkward, reminding Charles of how the other boy was in the early years of their friendships. He's jumpier, a bit weird about touch again.
Charles hates it—he just wants things to go back to normal—so he did the one thing he hates and decided to talk about it.

Merlin lost Arthur five years ago and the pain still cut deep every time he got out of bed.
His panic attacks hadn't got any better in the years that had passed, in fact they had gotten worse. His breath often went too shallow, head spinning as he gripped his palms too hard.
There was no one left to help him either.
Mordred was dead, Morgana was dead, Gwaine, Lancelot, Elyan, Arthur... all dead.
Even Gaius was lying on his death bed in his old age.
Merlin was left with nothing. Gwen was busy trying to run a kingdom, Percival had gone off the rails after Gwaine's death and no one could get too close to him. And Leon, he was stretched thin trying to support everyone.
But Merlin had some things to sort out.

“I’m the Cat Queen of Port Townsend,” the woman says, and it’s somehow both a casual thing and a declaration heavy with magical significance. Thomas can taste it on her words.
"And one of you is very much going to need to face a punishment," she says, but she seems rather bored by the whole endeavor, truly.
And Thomas wants to get her to react. He wants to earn something from her.
Thomas is lonely. He has something itching beneath his skin, carving a hollow out from within him.
Edwin is so stiff and uptight and clearly not onboard with the living. Charles is even more repressed than Edwin, whether he'd like to admit it or not.
And being lonely and empty and amnesiac and itching doesn't exactly improve a person's already tenuous self-control.
And so he blurts, like a reckless idiot with as much self-preservation as a bird landing right in front of a cat: “Why the fuck do you have a table of skeletons growing out of your floor?”
In an instant, the Queen’s gaze snaps to him.
“Y’know what?” the Queen asks, “I’m bored. Things around here get so incredibly mundane. But you? You’re fucking interesting. You’re going to come with me.”

The first time Charles had seen Edwin’s tolerance for pain was within their first week of being friends.
Charles hadn’t figured out how to change his outfit yet, so after much reassurance that it wasn’t needed (Charles), and much insistence that it must not be comfortable to walk about in only a vest (Edwin), so he wore a slightly too broad blazer. Edwin soldiered on in his dress shirt and sweater vest, pretending as if his discomfort was not the most apparent thing between the two boys.
