"Tommy.” There was a gruff voice, and then a hand over his eyes. A man he finally came to realize was Techno dragged him further back onto land, holding him to his chest. “Close your eyes,” he demanded.
“Techno—”
“Close them.” And Tommy knew, from some fuzzy part of his brain, that Techno was terrifying when he was angry, so he did as he was told, squeezing his eyes shut even though there was already a hand over them. “Good,” said Techno, still holding him tightly by the shoulders. “Now repeat after me.”
“Techno, what was—”
“I do not recognize the bodies in the water,” said Techno firmly, his hands gripping Tommy’s shoulders tighter. “Say it.”
OR: The three times Tommy doesn't recognize the bodies in the water, and the one time he does.

[Phil's face softened looking down on him, worry only partly waylayed. Physically, it seemed not unlikely Techno would make a full recovery given enough time and the appropriate care. It might be an uphill battle, but he'd faced more daunting tasks before.
The way Techno had looked at Phil however, the undiluted fear in his eyes suddenly all too real and desperate. It made Phil wonder if any injuries the piglin had sustained weighed up against the invisible scars left behind by his captor.]

Summary
There’s a grunt. One, two, three, quick and panicked, and suddenly a large, fluffy mass is leaning into Tommy’s space.
Still curled up in pain, Tommy almost misses it—almost misses the dilation of Techno’s pupils, almost misses the constant chuff, chuff, chuff, and snort, snort, snort, as Techno’s head dips down to look at him. But Tommy’s been looking for it all week, so, as if magnetized, Tommy still lifts his pained head upward.
Instinct-Techno is back. The Instinct-Techno that looks out for him. The Instinct-Techno that actually cares.

When Tommy was first rescued, he had told his crew that humans couldn't stand touch. Now, touch-starved and lonely, Tommy was willing to hold onto that secret forever.
But when Techno falls into his instincts, Tommy's resolve starts to crumble, and he starts to wonder exactly what he has to do to get this love all the time.

"Don't do anything to him," Tommy manages, heartbeat throbbing and throbbing. "Please."
Wilbur frowns, but it's Techno who steps forward. "Tommy, he's not going to do anything," Techno tells him cautiously. "You don't need to worry, alright?"
To you, Tommy would say, if he was stronger. He's not going to do anything to you.
But he doesn't. Tommy keeps his mouth shut—whatever it takes to stay.
When Techno and Wilbur Soot-Watson anger a bully, it shouldn't be an issue. They are as untouchable as they can get, for students anyway.
It's unfortunate that Tommy, their foster brother, isn't. Being their soft spot, it only makes sense that he becomes the next target.
