Sweet, steel-eyed Earwen with rosy lips and cheeks, calloused hands, star-lit hair, pure white feather dresses like the swans that the Teleri were all so fond of. After Alqualonde, she never wore those dresses ever again. Earwen and Eonwe were beautiful in their own right but together–
Arafinwe had told himself often enough that he ought to be grateful for what he still had left. It didn't help that Eonwe possessed the beauty that was the natural world. Ainur were always beautiful, it was the nature of the world of course. Beautiful things were good, ugly things were bad. And Eonwe was of great heart, of great beauty, with wings that were like glass directly under a ray of sunlight after a heavy storm– illuminating, untouchable, irreplicable.
It was no secret that the House of Finwe had a taste, an unfortunate, destructive taste, for pretty things.

___________________________The rest of the Great Hall was the solemn aftermath of a massacre.
Bodies twisted and piled onto one another, the absence of life rendering them all equal for once. Tables overturned and broken, tapestries ripped and shredded. Tiny hands grasped on swords, shattered potion vials glittered and reflected the drying blood and dying light. There was not a single part of the floor which had not tasted fresh blood.

The light through the curtains is hazier, almost dreamlike. In a dream, Olruggio’s face would be offset in stark relief—the one illogical point of focus in an otherwise blurry invention of his mind—but it’s not a dream, so Olruggio is hazy and warm and blurry too.
In a dream, when Olruggio touched him, the pleasure of it would be far away, guilt-laced, a memory of a memory of a hope. In a dream, his kiss would be fleeting, and his gentle affection the same.
But Qifrey’s never been lucky enough for that kind of safety. Olruggio is hot and solid and real against him. Olruggio touches him and all his nerve endings go alight. Olruggio holds him, and everything makes sense, and it’s hard to remember why it can’t last.

"I don't care," fumed Olruggio, weakly trying to pull out of Qifrey's grip. "It's my duty to-"
"If I were unwell, would you have me fend for myself?" Qifrey interrupted, his voice quick and firm as he affixed his piercing blue eye into Olruggio's.
"Of course not, but-"
"Then I will not be doing the same to you," he insisted as he leant closer, his grip on Olruggio's wrists loosening, but not releasing completely. "Look, Olly. You're trembling." Sure enough, whether from his body temperature, lack of sleep, or a secret third thing, Olruggio's body was wracked with subtle shivers that radiated through his arms into Qifrey's hands. Gently letting go of his wrists, Qifrey instead held one of his hands gently between the two of his own, looking up with his most imploring look. "Please," he asked quietly, his thumb grazing over the ridges on the back of Olruggio's hand. "Please allow me to take care of you."
