She never spent too much time in the library, made sure her essays were sloppy, and her highest grade was an E. She read arithmancy books charmed to look like girly magazines under her desk.
She was painstakingly mediocre. She did nothing to deserve his attention, and he had slowly, haltingly started to leave her alone.
So, this, this was unacceptable. Tom Riddle looking at her with suspicion clear in his dark eyes, confusion and shrewdness battling as he regarded her, and Slughorn had this, this look about him, and Hermione didn’t understand, no, didn’t want to understand.She had done everything right.
