The day after Elphaba and Glinda parted ways in the Emerald City, Glinda went missing. After an agonizing year of futile searching, Elphaba learns the horrible truth: Morrible sold Glinda as a pleasure slave outside of Oz. Elphie and Fiyero go to rescue Glinda, but find a broken shell of the vibrant girl they knew at Shiz. Perhaps most disturbingly, she has completely lost the ability to speak.
Glinda has given up. But Elphie and Fiyero are determined to help her learn to be happy again.

A wave of relief had washed over Elphaba. For the first time, the laughter echoing through the hall wasn't about her verdigris skin; today, as weird as it seemed, Galinda Upland was the one being laughed at by everyone. It was, objectively, a comical situation, and the collective jeering from students and teachers alike should have been a sweet, petty victory.
Yet, when her eyes found Galinda in the crowd—witnessing the furious struggle to contain her tears, the quivering lip, the desperate battle for composure—the triumph turned to ash in her mouth.
