the other side of this wide night, by mellyflori - 50,6K; Old Guard

Summary: Just above his eyeline, in dark purple Sharpie, is an addition so recent the ink is still a little wet. For a good time, call Nicky. Ask him about eating sushi with a fork. Underneath it is a phone number.

Joe isn’t sure how long he stands there, staring at the words, before he says, out loud, “Is... is that a euphemism?”

Reaction: This is totally captivating. A meet-weird sparks mutual attraction, which develops into two men negotiating the pitfalls of working around the time constraints of their jobs, but they make it work through trial and error, and actually talking to each other like adults. This is such a hard story to summarize, because nothing "happens"... but it's thoroughly sweet and comfortable and charming. The only problem is, I can't connect the story to the title in my mind, so when I look for the "sushi" story, I can't find it. Hmm... might need to make title art. Update: I did it -- Sushi with a fork (and chopsticks).

    Bookmarker's Notes

Imperfections (series), by Dasha - 384,3K in 15 stories; The Sentinel crossed with multiple fandoms.

Summary: If Blair's washing out of the guide program, who's taking care of Jim?

Reaction: This series is stupendous. It's a Sentinel AU where sentinels and guides are known and (relatively) common, with specific training and accreditation for the guides. This 2007 post, where Izhilsha rhapsodizes about the series explains it much better than I can. The worldbuilding is complex and detailed where it diverges from canon, and the sentinels and guides are as varied as RL people; there's no "set" way for either of them to act and/or react; we see difficult adjustments as well as easy adjustments. The series is sweeping and expansive and totally engrossing.

The main crossover is Sentinel & Monk, but in various stories, Dasha brings in characters from Highlander, Numb3rs, due South, Bones, Psych, and Quantum Leap, but knowledge of those fandoms is not necessary. Dasha deals with the characters, not the fandom, and they can be regarded as OCs if the reader doesn't know them, learning about these guest characters as Jim and Blair do.

Stories 1-9 are the "main storyline", Jim and Blair settling into their new status as sentinel and guide and dealing with all the other sentinels and guides that they meet. (Ignore the 1/? on story #8; Dasha may have intended more, but the ending is not a cliffhanger; it feels more like a teaser/lead-in to story #9.) Stories 10-15 are "side roads" that follow separate sentinel-and-guide pairs; Jim and Blair may not be around, but they're all in the same universe.

I would expect that everyone and their sisters and brothers have already read this but, if not, and if you're at all interested in The Sentinel fandom, you're in for a treat.

What Might Have Been (series), by Keira Marcos - 283K in 15 stories; Stargate Atlantis

Summary: This is an alternate universe series in that Rodney McKay never went to Atlantis, the mission failed within its first two years and John Sheppard finds himself back on Earth as the second in command of Stargate Command under the leadership of Major General Jack O’Neill. 250,000+ words in 10 main stories and 5 'interludes'. "And the Stars Burn" (first story of sequel series, follows directly after end of this series) brings count to 283,000+ words.

Reaction: Complete AU, and completely engrossing. When John returns from Atlantis, he and Rodney start a relationship. But there are dangerous currents swirling around them. As danger threatens, their circle of friends and family continues to grow bigger, closer, and stronger.

This series is epic in scope, but what I really appreciate is how everyone works together, standing united against the people that would harm them, and making more and more personal connections. (So many personal connections! <g>) John's family (an extra brother not in canon) and Rodney's family (Jeannie and Maddie) get absorbed into the SGC and, despite the dangers that threaten and obstacles that interfere, everyone is basically one big, happy family. Not nearly as sappy as that sounds, this is a series that I've reread multiple times because it is so totally, charmingly, heart-filling.

The Old West (Slash Version) by Arianna - 295,6K in 3 stories; The Sentinel

Summary: An AU set in the Old West wherein Jim is a sheriff and Blair is the town doctor.

Reaction: Arianna writes amazingly epic, detailed stories; this series is a shining example. I love that we see a more 'elemental' Jim and Blair, approaching the sentinel senses without any preconceptions from Blair, or angry resistance from Jim. The time period (shortly after the end of the Civil War) is thoroughly well-researched, and the stories spread out before our mind's eye like a series of epic movies. The people we know from The Sentinel are given believable backstories, and then move forward to make better lives for themselves. BUT! Although each story is positive, with an upbeat ending, the characters must deal with some unpleasant shit during the course of the action, including graphic descriptions of violence. Sensitive readers should be cautious.

If you prefer gen, the first story of the Old West trilogy is here -- Bitterwood Creek

Content Notes: Mentions of period-appropriate religious bigotry and racial bigotry. Descriptions of US Army massacring Indian tribe. Descriptions of wartime atrocities, prison-camp atrocities, whippings, brutalization of slaves, etc.

Reaction: Just what it says in the summary. But it's well-done, and cute, and leaves us with a smile on our face.
