    Summary

The heavy bass is making the oil-puddles shiver. Arthur leans against the wall, watching with a lazy eye as the puddles of filthy, iridescent water dance. Lines of neon jittering across their surface, pounding in time with the music, some garbage iridium synth track with too many drops that makes the whole alley vibrate, reverberating in his cyberware.

It sure as shit ain't good music, but the club is eating it up. Arthur supposes he should just be glad that he's not inside. He leans back, fitting his cigarette to his lips. A slow drag in, and then out.

Arthur holds his cigarette out - offering.

Eyes flick his way, glowing gold in the dark. His companion tilts his head, a silent refusal.

    Summary

A big, broad-shouldered man came through the door, the look of a long-haul trucker hanging around him like a ratty coat. He was wearing old oil-stained jeans and a frayed flannel shirt thrown over a white t-shirt, his scuffed boots peeling up at the toes with age.

He had the air of a man who’d reached the end of his rope. He had a battered wide-brimmed hat pulled low to cover his long, frazzled hair, half of which was scraped back into a loose tail. He had dark hair and dark skin and dark eyes that were framed by the deep-set bruises Arthur only ever saw on long-haulers and cattlemen, the marks of too many nights at the wheel or in the saddle, the normal rhythms of life stretched out and pulling at the seams.

The feller was handsome. Arthur noticed that as an afterthought, his breath catching in his chest. Under the bruises and the loose strands of hair, the feller was handsome. His eyes were bright and keen.

“Uh,” said Arthur, caught flat-footed by the unanticipated surge of attraction tightening his belly.  “Hi.”

The feller looked Arthur dead in the eye. “I need all of the caramel sauce that you have,” he said.

(or, a coffee shop au. yeah. i know.)

    Summary

“Nobles can’t have nice, sweet love matches?” Hilda asked, eyebrows raised.

“They can. With each other,” Dorothea said with some finality. “But with a commoner? Especially one that’s not rich on their own? No. Come on, you’ve spoken to your own classmates, haven’t you? They’ve got their century-old death feuds to resolve, dynasties to consolidate, Crested heirs to produce. I want food on the table, and music in the house, and someone to laugh over a joke with.”

Hilda helps Dorothea get ready for a date. Dorothea turns it into a consciousness-raising session.
