    Summary

Part of him wonders why people come to watch this: desperate men brawling for their next fix of a vice. He flexes his hands, knuckles bruised and splitting. From what Jud can see, it's the usual crowd: scarred and tattooed women looking on hungrily, men sporting leather and shouts that shook the dank room. It wasn’t cheap to get into Madame X’s backrooms, even if you were throwing yourself into the ring. There was a certain level of… proving yourself. Money, status, capability. People pay for dirty fights, or at the very least, fair ones.

    ***

Five fights Jud loses, and one that he wins.

    Summary

Ethan is the passive voice—subject absent, action complete, object suspended in midair. He is always the one chosen, infected, saved, abandoned. By. By. By. A man who perpetually receives action.

Leon is the past perfect—too many things already ended, yet still occupying space in the sentence. Raccoon City ended twenty-six years ago, but he is still there. Still in the city. Still on that night.

They meet in a sentence that needs no tense.

Ethan Winters was born in Louisiana in 1984. In 2017, he was killed in the Baker estate in Louisiana. In 2021, he truly died in a village in Romania. The mold preserved his consciousness, then dissolved him after he finished everything. This follows no grammatical rule.

In 1998, Leon Scott Kennedy learned to shoot in Raccoon City. He was twenty-one that year. For the twenty-seven years that followed, he has been learning how to forget. This, too, is a grammatical error—past perfect means the action was already completed at some point in the past, but twenty-seven years later, thirty years later, that action continues within him.

    So they meet.

The thing about time is that it's relative. If something happens in one moment it also happens in every moment throughout all of its existence.

That is to say that when a fraction of a fraction of the King slips into Avery's mind on New Year's Eve, Avery also wakes up a year prior with omnipotence, a world's worth of grief, and his best friend's real-life address burning in his head.

Along the way he picks up a baseball bat. It's a necessary provision for smashing Derek's laptop into a thousand pieces before he can so much as launch Minecraft.

(god just imagine Charon learning that there was a SECOND world war. Global and mobile, instead of static. How bad the statistics were compared to WWI. The Holocaust. So so so much pointless death. Awful. I doubt he’d take it well)
