“Caleb.” Jester slouches so far off the bed to the point where she is nearly on the ground. “Caleb. Caaaleeeb, I’m bored.” She reaches up and jabs her pointer finger into his cheek, twisting it so he can just feel a crescent dig into the side of his face.
He’s been reading the same paragraph for a full minute now, none of the words even processing as distracted as he is, and Caleb knows well enough when a task is fruitless. So, with a sigh, he shuts the book, brings it down semi-lightly onto Jester’s stomach, and says, “Hello bored. I am Caleb.”

The book shop that Jester finds herself in with Caleb is one of the most stuffy and pretentious places she’s ever been in her whole life which is saying a lot since she visited the Cobalt Soul library with Beau that one time.
It’s the kind of place where you feel like you have to whisper, where if you breathe too loud or walk to quickly you’ll get kicked out, and Jester can feel her blood thrumming beneath her skin. She wants to fuck the whole place up.
The only thing is that her partner in crime is not paying attention. At all.

The old gentleman with a rapier is congratulating people for a fight well fought, but Laudna’s eyes land on the green-skinned earth genasi to his right. The person is holding a massive glass maul, and has many striking features, but Laudna’s eyes are especially drawn to their spiky amethyst hair, and the massive amount of scarring on their head, neck, and the whole left side of their body.
Laudna feels her sluggishly beating heart skip a beat. She spent decades alone, with only Pate, Delilah, and the blooms she received from her numerous soulmates as company, so she’s gotten very good at reading those magical blooms, and guessing at the injuries they represent.
Laudna knows those scars. Seeing them takes her back to a night some years ago, when she bloomed so many thistles all over her body that she thought one of her soulmates would not live to see the next sunrise.
