The Soldier knew protocol. A failed mission meant punishment, then the Chair, then cryo. He had to go collect punishment, to ensure proper function on the next mission. It would be a risk, going back to the Vault. Insight had been compromised, communication was down. The Soldier did not know if the Vault was safe. The head hurt. He had been out of cryo too long. The words of the Captain on the helicarrier had damaged the neurological function. He would need the Chair to return to working condition. The Chair was in the Vault.

Summary
Six months in and the New Avengers had fallen into a routine with only a few bumps in the road. And being in charge of them isn't too hard. All things considered, Bucky thought being a leader wasn't so bad. The worst part was dealing with Valentina and keeping them from biting each other's heads off and trying to shrug off that exhaustion that just won't go away. But everything was fine, really. Nothing worth mentioning.

"Contrary to popular belief, I know exactly what I'm doing." Tony said, barely sparing Rhodey a glance after taking a swig of some dark liquid that didn't look like scotch or soda. Rhodey knew that was his cue to leave, Tony's version of a polite dismissal, but his feet were rooted to the floor. He couldn't take his eyes off the dark lines climbing up Tony's neck, lines they both knew weren't road rash. Road rash didn't look like it was trying to poison the brain. It didn't create the paleness of his skin, the sweat from his brow, and the tiredness of his eyes. It didn't cause him to collapse, too weak to hold himself up.

In a universe where Rhodey didn't let the road rash excuse go, events pan out very differently.

"I don't want to pry," Xisuma said when they were speaking before his official invitation to join. "And not answering won't change whether or not you get whitelisted. We admins just prefer to have a heads up if anything's likely to come trying to dig you up, so we can keep you and everyone else safe."
Grian thought back to obsidian and endstone and blood, to tattered wings and torn robes and so so many unseeable eyes, and swallowed hard.
"No," he said, his voice shaky. "No, I don't think anyone will come looking for me."
"Okay," Xisuma answered, and that was that.
Until they invited two new people to the server.
or, the Hermitcraft Backstory Rule says that you don't ask other people about their backstory, you let them tell it if they want to and leave it be if they don't.
Unfortunately for Grian, one of the newest Hermits was also a player on his old server - one he'd thought had been dead for years - and she's going to drag his backstory kicking and screaming into the light whether she means to or not.

The loudspeaker crackled again as the lava closed in, and Owen flinched, clamping his hands over his ears and shutting his eyes. He didn’t want to die here, he realized. It was a bit of a shock, because dying actually sounded amazing right then, but dying while some pompous executives played Britney Spears over top of his screaming was strangely unappealing.
He kept his eyes closed as his breathing quickened, but he swore he could hear the lava creeping under the door and into the cell, cooking him alive.
He didn’t want to die here, he wanted to go see Apo. He wanted to go back to before all of this and wake up early and bake Apo pie and he didn’t want to die here he couldn’t die here he wouldn’t DIE HERE
